Study suggests aliens could attack Earth to save the galaxy

By Comments (143)

While extreme weather fluctuations and rising sea levels are well-known effects of climate change, a bizarre new study suggests another reason to be wary of the perils of global warming: an alien invasion.

According to the 36-page study,  titled “Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis,” visitors from out of this world could see our polluting and destructive ways as a threat to the galaxy, and mount a pre-emptive strike against us.

According to the rather stretched logic of the study, published in the journal Acta Astronautica, extraterrestrial intelligence, or ETI, could observe the changing chemical composition of our atmosphere to deduce our rapid expansion and identify us as a threat to the Milky Way Galaxy.

“If ETI doubt that our course can be changed, then they may seek to preemptively destroy our civilization in order to protect other civilizations from us,” the study states.

Co-authored by Shawn Domagal-Goldman of NASA’s Planetary Science Division and Penn State researchers Seth Baum and Jacob Haqq-Misra, the study addresses several scenarios that could result from a meeting with ETI.

On the optimistic end of the scale, contact with aliens could result in “friendly and informative communication” that furthers our understanding of mathematics, physics and chemistry, and provides ways for us to eliminate disease and world hunger.

Other potential scenarios, however, have somewhat less promising outcomes.  In a passage that should elucidate just how seriously we should be taking this paper, the authors write that “a core concern is that ETI will learn of our presence and quickly travel to Earth to eat or enslave us.”

That’s right, eat or enslave us.  Other words that pop up in the study include “conquer”, “infect”, “dissect” and “pickle our skulls.”  No joke.

Yes, it sounds silly, but it’s hardly intended as hard-hitting science.  If anything, it’s simply a fun bit of research compiled by a group of science nerds in their spare time.  Lead author Domagal-Goldman stressed that the study was not funded by NASA,  and even acknowledged that his proposed outcomes were highly improbable.  In  a recent blog post, Domagal-Goldman wrote “Is such a scenario likely? I don’t think so. But it’s one of a myriad of possible (albeit unlikely) scenarios, and the point of the paper was to review them.”

So while pickled human head is unlikely to be appearing on alien buffets any time soon, perhaps it’s best not to take any chances.  So sort your damn recyclables.

Even ET’s want the munchies instead of just visiting.
For real how are ET for real. We can’t figure out the whereabouts of human aliens all over the place and it worse for this.

    • It's real says:

Seriously, I think research should be directed towards what is going on in our unseen environment already. Additional funding -if that is what it takes – to analyze the reality of what exists in the air already.

  • Steve says:

With more and more articles like this you know they are getting us ready for project “Blue Beam” very soon.

    • Unknown says:

Very true. You gotta watch what the government is feeding to the media and what the media is feeding to the people cause it might just be a new holocaust Technic to keep the pop low for economics and political reasons.

The truth is out there and your not going to like it.

      • Felicia says:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO an alien is going to come abduct me! Are you one of those retarded human beings that think the world is going to end in 2012 too? I sure bet on that.

        You’re a joke.

        • The Broken says:

You have to retarded to think ther is nothing going on around the planet at the moment..im glad ther are the few idiots out there who dont beleve it will make it easier for the smart ones who do let me guess you prob beleve the world is flat to ! Your the joke

          • spell check says:

really your going to insult the people who wrote this article by writing a comment full of spelling errors, missing words, and bad grammar? Sure it is ridiculous for them to publish an article about the possibility of an alien invasion because of the lack of recycling and care for the planet, but at least they know how to use spell check.

        • NR Ghee says:

Is this supposed to be an argument? ‘Cause it just sounds like an insult.

        • Faizan Khan says:

well i like yor post and thoughts good

I agree totally!!! No one should put crap like this out there…kids are scared of things as it is, without reading this gibberish!!!

i know like aliens arent going to attack us and the world is not going to end in 2012 these people are such liers who ever agrees with us reply.

and you shouldint be puting stuff like this on the enternet kids read this stuff and get scared you guys are all just a piece of CRAP!

        • brandon says:

if u honestly believe that were the only thing that lives as a civilation in all of the universes and galaxies…well than sweetie you are the joke. we arent even a scratch to the begining of whats out there. the truth will scare you, it’s best we never know because people like YOU, wont be able to handle the truth or accept it, and it’s people like you who will freak and riot and disrupt the earth in a panic because of their own fear of death or ignorance..while everyone who can accept the facts and aren’t closed minded to the existance of another civilization will be fine…how can u be soo closed to the idea of a living breathing thinking being…the world is full of them and u refuse to believe there is anyone before or after us..?? ur the punch line of the joke u think people are.

      • Kyeul Smith says:

        We are the aliens !

    • not avalible says:

alien invasions wont hapen even if people right a billion articals like this cuz aliens arent real. and even if they were real they couldnt come to earth cuz they cant get get the matireals to make a ufo.

  • HoaiPhai says:

All you joggers and exercise nuts take notice… aliens interested in lean cuisine will be on you like chimps on a birthday cake. I’ve known this for years so do as I have done and fatten up and be passed over when they come here to pick up a roast.

  • Bill says:

What a load of houwie! IF some other race from another plant had any interest in us, it would be to watch us blow ourselves up or to study us before we became extinct.
A threat to the Milky Way! The Earth is but one grain of sand sitting on the great barrier reef. The whole plant could be a bomb, and if it went off, the energy released would be less than one solar flare.
A threat to the universe….we’d die of starvation before we could travel out of our own solar system.

No, global warming is a weather cycle. Better called climate change. It’s happened before and it’s happening again. The little blue marble needs to have it’s population reduced, in a big way, and nature is attending to it.

    • miker says:

there is sand on the great barrier reef? you must be american who know’s crap other than their backyard. Grow a brain and find out where and what the reef is! Numbnu ts

      • fourx4ever says:

Do you have any idea how big the Galaxy is???? Never mind the universe. Earth isn’t even a pimple on the hind end of a blue whale!

Moreover, if aliens were watching us it probably wouldn’t be to ‘protect the rest of the universe’ from our ‘destructive ways’. Rather they would probably be making a study of us to figure out how best they can take this planet for their own use while expending the least energy to accomplish their goal.

Since the nuts that wrote this article are so much sniffing the glue of sci-fi, why don’t they consider that there are most likely alien races out there like the Klingons who are war-like and conquer worlds rather than protect them?? Working toward the greater good is an uncommon trait in nature. To assume every alien race is benevolent is a very naive point of view.

    • mackel says:

Bill r u a retard the reef is in the ocean there is no sand u need help Bill. Please Bill dont b a retard.

      • bob says:

Yeah, well, exactedness besides the point, what he is saying makes a lot of sense, we’re insignificant, even pathetically entertaining, certainly not a threat to anyone but ourselves, and we’re bloated. You people that latch on to tiny little inaccuracies make me laugh.

        • challenger says:

Bob I dont like your face and you smell of rotten meat. My intellect is that of a nuclear fitnatist and yours that of a helpless baby animal. Do not speak unless spoken to………CHALLENGER AWAY

        • Alien #1 says:

Let me interject for a moment. You stated we are only a threat to ourselves? What about the billions of species of animals and horticulture we are supposed to be sharing this planet with? We kill species by the millions every day and put alot to extinction. We are neanderthals who take what we think is ours, and we need to be stopped. I’m all for a dramatic decrease in human population even if i was one of the ones to go… as long as Earth and all her beauty would flourish.

      • Sillyppl says:

There is sand on the great barrier reef…the ocean does not go one forever…what is at the bottom? sand, silt, weeds, coral, etc…but there is sand…
Although, I do agree with you that Bills post is a bit over the top…the earth is not sitting on the great barrier reef, the reef is just a small part of the earth. And if the earth did explode it would pull many other bodies out of alignment…the sun for instance.

      • Jordan says:

dude calm down theres no reason for calling someojne a retard ust cause his oppinoin is diffent

    • Greg says:

Hey Bill, You are right about this article, it is pseudo-science at best. We don’t need to hear this kind of BS. But on the global warming issue I can’t agree with you. Yes climate changes have ocurred in the past for many reasons. However, the history of the mean global temp is well known by science for at least the past few hundred thousand years. The fact is, that the temperature increase in the past 50 years has been about 1.8 C when the global temp had been relatively steady for about the previous 10000 years. This rate of temperature increase is about 1000 times more rapid than any changes noted in the available climate record prior to the industrial age. IMHO this can only be due to the influence of mankind.

      • At Greg says:

Greg. Please allow me to put you in your place and shut your babbling trap. Modern science has become a modern cult, and those who follow it with their lives like you are chasing truths that only God knows. Is climate change really documented accurately over the past hundreds of thousands of years? Really? That is a joke that you even have the balls to make such an absurd generalization. I’ll give you some cold hard facts, which science, the “so called quest for empirical truth” has failed to provide on climate change. For example, the sun rises and sets every day, cold is the absence of heat, humans cannot breath without oxygen..those are some facts. On the other hand, science can’t even agree if the world is 10 000 years old (according to an indepth study of biblical genelogies since the start of time), or hundreds of billions of years old. If there is that great a discrepancy in science, then how can you tell me you are aware (or have empirical evidence) of climate changes in the past hundreds of thousands of years. If you think the climate change is so dramatic in our generation, are you forgetting the period called the “Ice Age”? haha you are so ignorant. All we are experiencing is natural disasters, that always occur. The only reason you are so paranoid about the state of our climate is because everything that goes on in the world is so much more publicized because of media advancements. So do yourself a favor and shut your babbling, opinionated, un-supported statements.

What about global cooling. We use to think that the earth was cooling rapidly into another ice age. The problem with the temperatures they have on record is they dont have every spot of the earth on record only small areas. Untill recent history. Can’t remember the time frame but sometime ago europe climate was actually alot warmer then it is now. But global cooling was just the in topic to be concerned about, whos to say we arn’t doing the same thing with global warming we wont know till its to late. IMO the evidance we have doesn’t prove its a threat.

    • Chris says:

Exactly right on all counts. We’re just big “May-flies” that will die off when the carcass on which we are feeding has been expended. Then only the ultra-rich, who can afford resources, will survive to repeat the cycle.

The existence of our planet, let alone our insignificant species, is less than irrelevant at even so small a scale as the galactic. To anything that can operate at a larger scale we are less than microscopic. This article just shows human-kind’s continued, and misled, predilection for the “humanocentric universe”.

    • nasale says:

Bill, It is spelled HOOEY NOT houwie! I agree with you that we need a reduction in the WORST way.Nature will take care of it-I agree with you there. But I have no idea if there are aliens out there and even Stephen Hawking thinks it is a possibility. He also thinks we should fear them because they wouldn’t come all that distance for nothing. The truth is, I don’t know for sure if aliens are around and neither does anyone else. I’m keeping my mind open.

    • Mcfly55 says:

      I’m with you.

  • BIGREDMOOSE says:

Sounds like they watched the extended cut of “The Abyss” and applied it to the idea of an alien race that isn’t already here.

Interesting article. A good bit of reading with some solid humour in a fantastical context.

People need to learn to chill out when criticizing things like this. Have some fun with it.

I look forward to the day when we meet and greet with a new civilization, maybe they have some answers for us regarding our place in this universe and whether or not the meaning of life really is “42.”

  • Warren says:

Haha nice touch at the end – “So sort your own damn recyclables.” Interesting viewpoint :)

  • Jwill says:

I have no comments of mine about ETI, but love all the comments of the others, makes good reading.

  • Gus 2012 says:

    Hola Mr. White,

…just stop the desinfo “People These Days Are Smarter”. THE NEW WORLD ORDER IS PAYING YOU?

  • jj says:

They will probably hit up china, or japan first. they are more lean. By then we should have some sort of shampoo that will make our heads taste bad.

  • Howard says:

My only criticism is that the article is characterized as research, which it is not. Any supposition or fantasy that any reader could put forward is as valid as the fantasy dreamt up by this NASA “reseracher” and his university crony. As for publishing it in any journal, except for a journal of science fiction or fantasy, someone’s editorial standards would have to be very low.

  • kk says:

If aliens are gone to get us I order ET or Paul to get me haha

  • theodore says:

Could it be we were put here to grow like cattle and when at a certain time aliens check us out now and then to see how we have populated, then we are to be harvested?

  • francis says:

lol it’s funny how the world try to know how the end of world will coming just read the bible no damn UFO is in just read lol

    • cynic says:

Actually francis, there’s plenty of references to flying vehicles in your bible. And a lot more in a lot of other (older wiser) religions. And if you want people to take you seriously, improve your grammar/spelling – “no damn ufo is in just read lol” is not a sentence.

    • Andrew says:

Funny given your grammer maybe you should “read” more. Further you might want to pick up an introductory to science well your at it. You may be suprised to learn the world is not flat or the cetre of the universe and atoms… don’t even get my started lol

    • Alien #1 says:

If you are going to read a “story book” to determine the outcome of the end…then try reading The War of the Worlds, makes for a more interesting story and all around better reading material. If you’re going to believe in a story book because someone told you it is true who wasn’t even there to witness, then you’re gullable which is a very common human trait. So point in place, the book War of the Worlds was based on a true story. There, now you have something else to believe in.

  • Bob says:

They shouldn’t call this a “study”.

The environmental problems on earth are caused by the huge masses of ignorant people indulging in runaway growth of human population and industry.

Interstellar space travel requires a crew of a fixed size in space for many decades, if not longer, and would require trillions of dollars per person. There is no danger of exporting human stupidity to other inhabitable planets.

Also, it would make more sense for aliens to zap us when we get there, not before we’ve even left.

What a silly article about a non-study! Still, it is welcome to see anything at all that recognizes the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

  • Stimpy says:

Maybe, before you urban hillbillies condemn university educated researchers for publishing a semi-fantastical study on senerios concerning ETI, you should lean to use spell check and proper grammical structure.

  • The Albanian says:

    Very good article Bill.

This E.T article is just another theory of a million other theorys. Anything is possible and vice versa. Ther is a population problem on earth no doubt, just a 100 years ago the population was 4 billion and now its almost 8 billion, comparing to humans existing on this planet for millions of years, that is a huge jump on numbers, just imagine that number in 50 years, it will triple. If we are being watched by E.T and studdied, to them we will appear as a virus/cancer to this planet, we find a habitable area invade it use it until there is nothing left, then we move on to another area we can destroy and spread.
When you hurt your skin, the blood covers that area for weeks until it heals, think of planet earth that way, we have punctured layers of it, and we will be coverd by clouds for millions of years until it is recovered, by then most of us will be gone.
It is possible that E.T beings are our size, but it is also possible that they are not. Depending on the planet and environment they live in if they exist, their shapes and sizes will be different.
If for example their planet is the size of Jupiter, the people living there will be larger, taller possibly 50 foot tall weighing at 80 tons, or they could be the opposite, their planet could be the size of a marble and to us they could be invisible or as small as ants depending on the size of their planet. During a cosmic period of millions of years, a SUN can be created as small as a soccer ball, it would be impossible for them to travel through space, and that is what we are comparing us to the milkay way and the damage we might cause to it is nonesence.
There might be aliens on this planet, and there might not be. It could be that governments wanted us to have the illusion of aliens to have something to be affraid of or be mysetious about, the government could be pulling a term called (The Cansas City Shuffle) to the human civilisation, think of a magician, that is what they do to perform a trick(you make some noise on one side only to take the attention off of the actual trick happening on the other side).
You will not know the truth and neither will I.
We will find out with time and only time.
Everything else in between is a guess.

    • Lion says:

Sorry to correct Albanian, when I attended high school in the 1950′s the world population was 2.5 billion.
Considering the high cost and energy of space travel, why would ET bother with anything but scientific exploration or genetic enhancement of humanity. Would we load up and eat cow in our returning spacecraft if we found one on a habitable planet. Get real folks!!! Most people I know don’t even want you to fish on their expensive boats. Any interstellar travelers would not be caught dead foraging and eating bacteria infested creatures on a strange planet!!
I believe we are our own worst enemies and should strive to keep our civilization strong and healthy.

  • Bill says:

    Stimpy is a joke! “lean”

  • Joe says:

There is intelligent life in space. The proof is that they haven’t
    contac us.

    • Cory says:

A lot of the comments are good, but its a touchy subject to talk about.Yes they are intelligent life in space because we existe, that is are proof but there so much sceptisisme in humain nature and that is one of are flase.I understand that its not evrybody thats ready to accept it because we don’t see extratrestriel intelligent every day,but yet again people will always have there on vews and opinion about anything and evrything. As long as we keep talking about it or do research we are on the right path.Yes there is some pretty ignorante people out there but there is also a lot of good pepole that is trying to make the world a better place.I am gettings side track but to get back to the subjetc,I don’t think we are enough of a treat yet in evolution to be targeted by a nother civilisation. Its like going in Africa and asking a ant(TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER).I like the tought of having in encounter whit another intelligent life form that is freindly of course it would speed un are evolution process drasticly but if it would be a non freindly life form then I hope that the goverment has a couples tricks up it sleeve were going to need it.They probobly do have a lot of good thecnologie down in area 51 and 52 that we don’t know about.I read a wile back that some physicis were doing reverse ingenniring on some alien space craft,so like the other guy said only will time will tell.

    • bluedude says:

      Couldn’t have said it better.
Who would want to talk to us retards?

    • Henry says:

and this comment would mean that they are smarter than us and no better contact us and stir up some hornet’s nest – or just plain smart enough to not think we are worth the contact .. :)
