Is this boy born with night vision the next step in human evolution?
A blue-eyed Chinese boy born with cat-like night vision may offer clues to the future of human evolution.
When Nong Yongsui was two-months-old his father, Nong Shihua, was told by doctors not to worry about his son’s unique blue eyes and that his eyes would be fine when he grew up; now, years later, Yongsui’s father, teacher and doctors are convinced the young boy’s eyes have given him a special ability — night vision.
“In the dark Nong’s eyes would emit a kind of blue-green light when shone upon by a flash light — his eyes were just like cat eyes.”
A Chinese news reel, now available on YouTube, claims that Yongsui’s rare blue eyes glow green when light hits them and allow him to see in the dark as clearly as most people do during the day, an attribute prompting some to call him the next step in human evolution.
The video originally surfaced in 2009 but has just recently gained international attention. The video reports that Yongsui began experiencing blurred vision in daylight, having to squint when playing outside during the day but able to catch crickets at night without needing a flashlight. Bi Donglei, from the Heng County Television Station in Guangxi also claims that Yongsui was able to answer questions she handed him in the dark.
The lack of any definitive evidence has left many skeptical of Yongsui’s abilities. Night vision is made possible in nocturnal animals, such as cats, by a thin layer of cells called the tapetum lucidum. These cells create a “retroreflector” — when a beam of light hits the tapetum, it is reflected directly back along its path. This process amplifies incoming light allowing the animal to see at night, it is also the reason that cat’s eyes flash when they are illuminated.
While many are calling Yongsui’s eyes “cat-like” experts aren’t so sure. “Evolutionarily, mutations can result in differences that allow for new environmental niche exploitation. But such mutations are modified over long periods. A functional tapetum in a human would be just as absurd as a human born with wings. It can’t happen,” said James Reynolds, a pediatric ophthalmologist at State University of New York.
The Alien Disclosure Group, an extraterrestrial and paranormal organization, has offered some different theories, “Could Nong Yongsui be a Hybrid or Starchild? A new and growing generation of extraordinary and gifted children are springing up across our planet, is the human species evolving, or possibly our Extraterrestrial visitors tinkering with our DNA?”
There’s no doubt that Yongsui’s eyes are rare for his ethnicity but without further investigation into his uncommon abilities it’s impossible to know for sure what he sees and why — does he indeed have cat eyes due to a bizarre genetic mutation? Is perhaps another attribute, such as rod-rich retinas, the reason for his improved night vision? We’ll just have to wait and see.

In 200 years, humans will no longer have hair because we no longer have a use for it as temperatures are on the rise and the purpose of hair is to keep us warm.
Actually, no. We won’t be hairless unless that confers a survival or mating advantage. Mutations are populated through generations when there is an advantage, otherwise they are passed on the same as any other trait and can die out just as easily as they came about. If having no hair made you sexier and you fathered/mothered more children or allowed you to survive better (and again, have more children) then yes, hairlessness would spread in the population since there would be more hairless than hairy people being born each generation. But until then, keep the razor handy.

Scientists have found in the last hundered years humans have changed greatly, from looks to how much oxygen are blood holds. Even I have noticed that my son in 35′c sometimes complains that he’s cold and him and his friends go out and play sports in that weather like it’s nothing! while I’m sitting right beside the air conditioner sweating to death. Things that don’t change die off. It could be because of polution but there’s also a fight against that saying that we’re adapting to that too.

Humankind, like every other organism on this planet, has been evoloving for millions of generations. Currently we do not tend to adapt because we force our circumstances and environments to suit us, not the other way around. But how can you, as a member of our contemporary society, presumably raised and educated in a manner similar to that which the rest of us are familiar, make a statement as unfounded and absurd as “there is no evolution – never has been” (pp).
It is nothing short of shocking that some people are so backward, and perhaps steeped in antiquated mysticism, as to make outrageous claims like that in public… How can you say somtething like that with a straight face?
I am 31 years old and have taken earth sciences at the University of Western Ontario. I have sat through many evolutionary classes in chemistry, biology, and earth science classes. I have also taken a college diploma, and am working on a second university degree. I consider myself educated, however, I have easily reached the conclusion that evolution does not add up. There are many fundamental flaws in the evolutionary system. For example the law of uniformitarianism in earth sciences that is completely unprovable, or some of the base assupmptions that go into many dating systems. If you track human evolutionary study through the last century you will see that it is littered with mistakes such as classifying animal remains as another species of human. Also, it can be seen by using evolutionary data from various evolutionary textbooks that all “species” of humans have co-existed at the exact same time. I find it far easier to believe that Almighty God spoke, and the world came into being,as presented in the Bible, rather than believing in the fairy tale that humans evolved over millions of years from monkeys! I find macro-evolution laughable.
Dan, please go back to UWO and politely ask for your money back, as clearly they weren’t able to teach you a single thing. Evolution isn’t theory any more than gravity is theory. It’s real, it happens and just because we don’t have rock solid, undeniable proof of the link between humans and our ancestors doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of reliable evidence for the evolutionary process in hundreds of other species both in the animal and plant kingdoms. You do realize, don’t you, that there isn’t a single reputable scientist alive who won’t defend the process of evolution? Not one.

There is nowhere on earth that states the evolution is absolute fact clicker. It is theory and nothing else. In fact, if evolution had any basis in truth there should still be clans of evolving persons.
Well Bill, the trouble with evolution is that it takes place over millennia. That’s hard for us to grasp, but our job is to understand it nonetheless. I wish I could provide you with the kind of proof I think you’re looking for, but it doesn’t exist. Much like there is no “proof” that the sun hasn’t always been there to light up our days, I can’t offer proof of evolution the way you’re thinking.

Your comment about evolving clans highlights the problem with the way evolution has been communicated in school – i.e. poorly. People who doubt evolution always ask “why aren’t we still evolving then?” But if you stop and think about the time scales we’re talking about not to mention the actual process by which evolution operates, you’ll realize how unlikely it is that we will ever find (over the course of one lifetime) any evolutionary progress in our own species, or any other for that matter.
My advice: stop asking for easy answers to complex problems. Start reading. Read a lot. Then read some more. The truth is complicated and sometimes our understanding has giant holes which need to be filled. Instead of assuming that what we know is wrong, just do what scientists do: Work with what you have and trust that over time thos holes will be filled and our picture of the universe will become ever sharper and more detailed.

If you want to talk evolution, go to JREF [http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?p=6240391#post6240391] or other forums, where’ you’ll quickly learn (if you actually pay attention) that there is not one single instance of evolutionary proof anywhere.
Joe, I suggest you go and read that forum again. It would seem that plenty of rational folks have shown up to undo all of the misinformation that was presented by Joe Boudreault. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence for evolution which is why the scientific community has embraced it.
I have a feeling that people who decry evolution believe that for some unknown reason, atheists have tried to brainwash the world with evolution in their quest to rid the earth of religion. But that’s just not the case. Evolution, like any theory, has to stand up to rigorous questioning and debate. It must prove itself time and again to be consistent with all experimental evidence. Evolution has passed these tests with flying colours. It may not satisfy every single question about the universe, but it wasn’t meant to. It only attempts to explain how we ended up with the amazing diverse amount of life on our planet.
At this point, the only reason NOT to accept evolution is that your own personal beliefs prevent you from doing so. Kind of like when your girlfriend breaks up with you but you can’t accept it right away because it means you need to look at yourself and ask some uncomfortable questions. But that’s what science does – it asks all of the uncomfortable questions, until eventually we get to the truth.

Except that there is no evidence of god. The fossil record has millions of years of evidence of evolution. On the simplest level the fossil record reveals unicellular organisms at the bottom and multicellular on the top. There is more research being done and more to learn. There will always be gaps. But there simply is no evidence of god what so ever. The reason for god cannot be “we don’t know the answer to that therefore it must be god did it.”

The long and short of my response to your comment is rather simple; to this day there isn’t a single person who, with undeniable proof, can factually state that the universe and its occupants came in to being and “evolved” in any specific manor without alluding to or including personal beliefs, opinions, or unproven theory (scientific, historical, cultural, etc).

Further, in an earlier response to another poster, you said that we would never be able to observe evolution in action in any species. Wrong – fruit flies have a short enough life span that scientists can observe evolution occurring over many generations. It can be witnessed, observed, and may I say, proven.
Fossils show clearly that species change over time. Are you denying the existence of fossils? That would make you insane. Are you claiming to evolution isn’t disprovable? Just find a fossil rabbit in the precambrian or some such thing.

India is also heavily polluted and so is Mexico and other parts of the world. You forgot something, there are 1 billion people in India and 1 billion in China, more people means more chance of mutatation, and yes people have evolved, even in a few hundred years.
If you go back 50,000 years also, the “asian” gene was a mutation and since we came from Africa where did white people come from? It’s called evolution and evolution starts with a mutation. Mutations that succeed are evolution, mutations that don’t, don’t. If the children with many arms, legs, etc. survive and have children with others the same as they are, then this will cause evolution of those people. We know since pasty white skin would end up sun burned in african sun. Read about melanin and it’s purpose. Skin color is an adaptation to environment. There’s a reason why people from “hot” regions on this planet have darker skin. It’s not a fashion statement.

Unfortunately for Nong Yongsui, some government entity will take him away and will turn him into a guinea pig to see what makes him tick.
Interesting, I wonder if his colour vision is the same as a cat then. As the mechanics of eyes tend to either favor night vision, or colour vision. Perhaps they could do additional tests to see just where his eyes are at, between a normal human and a normal cat. Hmm.
Evolution happens, but we normally don’t notice it because it is a painstakingly slow process. Why wouldn’t humans evolve? We’re biological beings, same as animals.
Pollution certainly does play a role, but in every sort of adversity, you adapt, or you die. One might not see the evolution happening, but evolution is adaptation. The reasons may not be clear for this anomaly in this little lad’s eyes (and they are gorgeous!!)but as time wears on, our descendents will figure that out–just as we figure out the reasons for anomalies in past species.
This is science at its best–and a discovery worth watching!

the funny thing is that billions of people choose to believe the THEORIES of some scientist they have never met. they choose to believe in evolution even though it has never been proven. still waiting on the “missing link” are we??? maybe it’s missing because it was never there. if you want to put all your faith and belief in some scientist who came up with a THEORY go ahead, but just because someone decides not to believe the scientists THEORIES does not make them an idiot. the reason they claim that evolution occurs very slowly is because there is no written history to support that THEORY. people have been the same throughout all recorded history. some scientist might say the world is billions or trillions of years old, but that doesn’t mean he is right. the process of their most trusted mechinism to measure this is flawed. yes carbon dating is flawed and if you have ever learned about science you would know this because the entire formula is based on some scientists ASSUMPTION!!!
Not as funny as the masses who believe in the theory of God creating the world, which has even less evidence, or the fact that there is a god in the first place. That most definitely is just a theory, with even less evidence and science and logic behind it than the theory of evolution.

I think you need to look at your use of the world ‘theory’ in your comment. Science NEVER assumes without evidence. Colloquially, theory is used to describe a statement which is tenous and hasn’t been proven.
HOWEVER, in science, a theory is used in a different sense. Say, an experiment is carried out to test a hypothesis. The hypothesis is proved correct through observation and empirical data, and a slightly different experiment is carried out to test another related hypothesis. When a collection of correct, related hypotheses are collected, a theory is proposed which logically links them. The theory is then submitted for rigourous scientific testing and review, and if it passes this, it is accepeted as the closest version of the truth.
This has occurred over hundreds of years, in itself evolving, as the best theory with the best supporting data is adapted and improved uopn, until we are left with the theory of natural selection and Darwinian evolution. Of course, since Darwin’s time, the theory has been even more refined due to more evidence, better equipment and more numerous scientists. Read ‘Almost like a Whale’ by Professor Steve Jones. It is an update to On the Origin of Species, and provides the evidence you are so desperately trying to deny.

Ok, first of all, mutations happen all the time. Some go no where, others provide a benefit that leads to greater survival in those affected by it. If there is a benefit, and if that benefit is great enough that the people (or whatever creature) that don’t have that benefit don’t reproduce enough or die out, and the ones with the benefit reproduce more, it gradually becomes evolution over a long, long time. Evolution doesn’t happen suddenly because more and more people suddenly start to have a particular trait. Will this be a new stage in human evolution? If this boy has several children and passes on his eyes to them, and they go on to have many children and they pass on the eyes to them and so on and so on, and IF these descendents manage to multiply and spread, and if the rest of the human race is some how left in the dust because of it…maybe. Not likely.

Moreover, I’m surprised you’re telling Sheri she needs to know more about biology when your grasp of the theory of evolution is tenuous at best.
I sort of admire your dedication, but your blind faith and quixotic arguments are both indicators of a mind that refuses to think for itself. I get that you have serious doubts when it comes to evolution, but you should have even greater reservations about creationism – at least evolution can support itself with evidence. All creationism has going for it is a 5,000 year-old text written before the dawn of science by men who needed a way of controlling a populace that was in danger of tearing itself apart.
Have you ever considered that it is impossible for a perfect being to create anything as imperfect as the Bible?

There is many instances of what some refer to as genetic throw back, when an infant child or animal is born it maybe as simple as the appearance or physical quality that does not resemble parents in anyway, it is explained by a gene that’s normaly turned off being turned on in the individual, this childs eyes can easily be due to some ancient gene that’s been off for thousands of generations now being turned on, maybe due to bacteria, virus, a certain chemical pollution as we all know China does suffer from Chemicals being used in infant formulas and milk and many other possibilities that could have turned on an ancient gene that’s laid dormant sleeping for many generations.
His eye sight may change with age as many babies are born with blue eyes changing to brown and not unlike a lot of Irish People having eye colour changing from Hazel to Green depending on mood which affects the amount of blood and temperature of blood in the back of the eye causing light to be reflected changing the eyes colour appearance.

This story appears to be all about a fascination with an asian child with bright blue eyes. Let’s not let people imply that this eye colour leads to enhanced night vision. It does not. Cats and dogs and other animals that you will see that have a bright greenish glow from their pupil (not from the iris) when light is shone in their eyes is the result of a specific night vision adaptation. It is called a tapetum a (highly reflective film behind the retina). It effectively reflects the light that hits the retina back to the retina thereby doubling the effective light uptake of the retina. This adaptation does enhance night vision at the expense of resolution. Humans have better ability to resolve detail but poorer night vision than animals like cats. I see no evidence from the video shown of this child having a tapetum. The only other “mutation” that could possibly enhance this child’s night vision, would be if he had an unusually high density of rod receptors (for nighttime) in his retina relative to that of cones (for daytime vision). Again if this were true, he would gain some night vision improvement at the expense of resolution. Either of these ways in which his night vision could be enhanced as I have laid out, would all come at the expense of his ability to resolve detail. I would not consider this an advancement unless our world plunges into permanent darkness.

Joe, I’m getting the impression that you think: Because evolution doesn’t explain the beginning of everything, therefore god exists. There isn’t a single scientist that can offer an explanation for everything, but that doesn’t mean that we need to believe in god. Believing in god is what you do when you desperately need answers but can’t wait for science to provide them. So you exit a rational frame of mind and jump to the supernatural. I grant you – it’s very convenient. For the most part we are urban dwellers now. What advantage would “night vision” give us? A greater sensitivity to infrared spectrum might be an advantage, assuming there was no corresponding loss of perception at slower wavelengths, but from what is stated in this article I can’t see any reason to believe this is “evolution” and not genetic tampering…

Just to clarify. In science (but not the media) an idea which is unproven but which you are going to test is called a hypothesis this is what the media (and you) call a theory. A scientific theory is a hypothesis that has been tested and retested (including independently) and found to hold true.
So the theory of evolution means it has been examined and tested by many scientists and found to be true. If evidence should appear that seems to invalidate the theory of evolution, it will be tested and retested and if it is real evidence then scientists will have to develop a new hypotheseis that includes the new evidence and then retest until eventually they arrive at a new theory. But this has not happened. Evolution is real – live with it!
You needn’t lecture me on the difference between hypothesis and theory; know them quite well. What you need to do (along withy all the other brain-dead jobs who believe in Darwinism) is to re-educate yourself on what the original classic scientific principle is. Neo-Darwinism forgot about that long ago. Instead they feed on innuendo and wild speculation. Evolution exists only inn the sense of adaptation within species or kinds, nowhere else. Because you whack-jobs cannot define a Beginning, you have no place at the table of real science, which was founded by Christians and Jews, by the way, not atheists.
