Surprise, surprise. Texting while on a date is a big no-no

By No Comments

A Canadian survey finds 95 percent of women would feel annoyed if their companion used their smartphone while on a date. And most respondents would prefer a real Valentine’s Day card as opposed to a digital one.

Perhaps the results of a newly published report aren’t much of a shocker: 95 percent of Canadian women age 25 to 54 said they’d be annoyed if their date unnecessarily or repeatedly used their smartphone.

Sure, these findings might be from the “duh” department, but how many times have you been at a restaurant and glanced over at the table beside you and one – if not both – people are face-down on their mobile devices.

Commissioned by Jackson-Triggs – the award-winning Canadian wine maker – this national survey also found 80 percent of women would prefer to receive a Valentine’s Day message in person opposed to one via a mobile phone, tablet or laptop. Only 2 percent said they’d prefer a digital message.

“We polled a selection of Canadian women and quickly realized the toll technology takes on human interaction,” said Rich Fortin, marketing director of Jackson-Triggs, in a company statement. “The message became clear: this Valentine’s Day, we need to focus on face-time.”

And no, I’m certain Fortin doesn’t mean Apple’s FaceTime video calling application.

That being said, it’s not that technology is a Boy’s Only club: roughly 50 percent of the women polled own a smartphone.

For those who like to read survey details: The national online survey was conducted from January 11th to January 16th, 2011, from a sampling of 890 Canadian women, each of whom are Angus Reid Forum panel members. Their ages spanned 25 to 54 years, and must be a smartphone or cell phone owner. The margin of error — which measures sampling variability — is +/- %, 19 times out of 20. The sample was balanced by age, gender and region according to the most recent census data.
