Touch, too
Windows 8 was designed to work on a wide number of computers – even low-powered ones with modest system specifications – but it's also designed heavily for touchscreen tablets. Microsoft acknowledges tablets are going to be one of the dominant form factors and they're planning ahead for a late 2011 or early 2012 launch.

Microsoft recently unveiled more information about its upcoming Windows 8 platform, a radical redesign for personal computers, including the new “Metro” interface that has the tech world buzzing. If you’d like to learn more about Windows 8, check out the following eight features worth getting excited over. This seems more stream-lined and efficient… I like it.

  • lol says:

    @axiom

you gleaned all that from an image ?

either you are VERY smart, or just another consumer fooled by the world’s largest pay for BETA test software company.

I can’t wait for M$ to release something that is what most companies consider a release candidate, as opposed to what they usually release that most companies classify as a BETA test candidate.

Sorry axiom, but I must believe you have been fooled. I don’t trust M$ to do release anything that doesn’t need frequent service pack updates…

Try android, or linux…much more reliable and robust systems for PC and tablets…

Most of the Distro’s are free as well…

    • victor says:

i agree with you LOL,have tried the beta and it sucks hard to set up and get to where you want to go,
      im keeping my win7 pro.

    • Jack says:

You’re an idiot, as most people who use the phrase “M$” are.

      • Mark says:

Really Jack…You love your anonymity on the web don’t you. Would you have talked to anybody this way when you were face to face in days gone by. This is opinion. You’re welcomed to any opinion, but atleast have one about the topic or shut up

  • hawk79 says:

yet another in a long line of MS screups they haven’t had a decent OS since windows 95/98

    • anaper says:

Thank you, hawk79! Nice to see I’m not the only one believing that Windows 95/98 was (still is on one of my older PC’s) the best OS.

  • Kenn says:

NOT ANOTHER CHANGE ! I found XP fine, I adapted to Vista with a lot of problems and windows 7 is lousy. I am seriously thinking of getting a Mac or switching to linux just to get away from microsoft and their constant changes

    • victor says:

love xp,hate vista, hate windows 8 to confusing to set up, love win 7 64 its the best of vista and xp in one and easy to set up cant see what you hate about it please explain?

      • anaper says:

Operating Office (Word, Excel, ppt etc) in Win 7 is designed for people who can’t read…who need lil’ icons to identify tasks. What’s wrong with drop-down menues where you can choose a myriad of options for the task at hand. For those of us, who use PCs as a means to an end in business, all these upgrades are rather frustrating. Does that more or less answer your question, Victor?… ;-)

    • anaper says:

I agree with you too. Tried Vista with Windows 7, but reverted to XP. But, I guess sooner or later (hopefully later) we’ll have no other choice to upgrade to Windows 8 or leave MS altogether.

  • pcwhipped says:

@lol, well considering the ridiculous amount of hardware combinations that wondows must work on to be considered stable, its the 1 of the few logical ways of doing it………the release.

  • Doug Vanderwater says:

I am just getting used to Windows 7 (pro version)and still struggling with getting programs to operate that were perfectly fine in Windows XP. There is little backward compatability. I expect that business is struggling as well with changes to Windows 7 and are not already looking forward to switching into Windows 8. We ordinary folks would appreciate a little time to catch up, and when a new system is intorduced, to have reasonable backward compatability. Sincerely, Doug.

  • Allan says:

All these new operating systems suck.
should have just updated the XP.. or kept it available.
sure they are designed to be quicker, but are a pain in the butt for work.
We don’t need touch screens, and features.. Some of us just want the basics, without the bells and whistles.

I to will consider someone else other then microsoft. tired of their changes.

    • gary says:

I tottalley agree !!!! im new to windows 7 and its good vasta sucked i did have windows xp and liked it , but im not paying to upgrad any more to much dame money and to many gadgets keep it simple…………………..

      • Lady says:

Gary, check your spelling before you make a public post!! wow

        • gary says:

          kiss my ass lady !!!!!!!!!!!

        • Jo says:

Can’t you think of something else to bitch about, or how about nothing at all, Lady. Be grateful people are expressing their opinions, whether you approve of their spelling or not.

My gosh, what are you, the word cop or something?

Oh, wait, I am sure you, Lady, are perfect, and no one comes close to how good you are, and so you expect that every one ought to be perfect just like you…well, guess what, there are a myriad of people in Canada who express themselves in a myriad of ways so my advice to you is:

Lighten up, get over yourself and have a little fun in your life, because it really sounds like you need a good romp in the sack.

  • rda says:

@lady- why, whuts da bigg deel. Makes four moor intrestin reedin :) lol

  • ABC says:

Buy a mac – problem solved.

    • Bryan says:

We’re not all hippies doing graphic design art projects publicly in coffee shops, sorry.

Unfortunately spending over $1k on a computer isn’t an option for everyone. Also considering that most people use Microsoft/Windows-based products there’s compatibility issues as well. Things that are supposed to work in both computers don’t always work – how is that better?

The average computer user won’t necessarily find a MAC easier to use either. In terms of doing basic schoolwork or internet browsing, it’s all the same.

    • anaper says:

@ ABC….problem solved as it relates to the OS or the spelling?…lol

    • Sam says:

Ah yes. Closed architecture. Usage according to the Steve Jobs world view. Hideously overpriced.

      No thanks.

  • Bryan says:

Why should we pay more for a mac that’s incompatible with everything on a windows computer…. have you ever tried making powerpoint presentations on Office for MAC and then viewing them during a school presentation, and seeing red x’s all over the place while presenting in front of 50 people?? Not fun, I assure you.

I just had a computer with XP fail on me (a nearly TEN year old computer!). I doubt this new Win7 one will last that long. Bring us something that works, and stick with it for more than 6 months. Not fair to all the businesses to have to keep spending money on these ridiculous upgrades.

  • Black Monday says:

As I sit here in front of my Win 7 looking at this article, I think, “are you kidding me?” “To much change” “Cold environment”

  • Mike says:

I think it’s time we upgraded to 10-bit architecture. With each character being 10 ones and zeros, remote hacking would become much more difficult. Defender is good but it can only do so much against current abilities of cyber-criminals.

    • Eka says:

I LOVE Red Green! I haven’t seen it in ages as they took it off my local channel. I used to love how he cloesd the show something like If your woman doesn’t find you handsome, you can at least be handy.

  • gerry says:

Linux Ubuntu 11.04 Is for free and is the best OS I have had. NO virus no problems, If your not happy with your system or cant afford MS 8 try Ubuntu it free .

  • Tut says:

I bought a desktop yrs ago that could be upgraded came with xp had to change motherboard case an power supply um the disk drives to hard drive only thing the same so microsoft says my lisc. no good linux is way faster takes time to learn but worth saving the money to buy new micro crap that they dont stand behind tmho.win 98 was good once it was set up well but no good with todays stuff newbies going to pay an if you have a mind you have a decent computer :)maybe micro copy system that works from someplace an cut price by factor of ten :)when i bought this computer i thought i had also bought lisc. for the system to run it but seems every time you change hardware you have to pay again their constant fixs cause constant crashs atleast for me as far as win 8 goes um godspeed :)hope you didnt pay for it

  • TOMovieman says:

I installed the Developers version from BUILD in 15 minutes!
That’s the quickest install for any version of Windows I’ve ever had.

I love the tiled Apps and many of the new features.
I won’t be buying a touch-screen monitor so using the mouse takes a little getting used to.
The hardest part I found was trying to quit the OS :-).
That being said, unless I get another discount code for being a Beta tester, I don’t see me replacing Win 7 X64 which works great and serves my purposes.

  • George says:

Your all forgetting the point. These upgrades are not for the average computer user they are to generate more millions for Microsoft and give the computer geeks something to do while they are employed. It also keeps the computer manufactures in business as most of these upgrades do not work on older computers.

This also applies to other high cost program companies such as Adobe.

AS I say it is all about money, that is why software piracy is so rampant because the average person cannot afford to keep up with the upgrades.

With the economy getting worst programs such as Linux, Gimp and Inkscape will become more popular.

  • BumTeck says:

Microsoft did this before with Vista and it will either be another dud praising it as greatest thing on earth or an actual improvement for the Tablet world including non x86 based chipsests.

  • Black Monday says:

    BumTeck

So true, the way they are going, they seem to make one good os, then a bad one next and so on. Windows ME remember that?
