Incredible artificial organs
Bionic body parts are no longer exclusive to the realm of science fiction. With each passing year, researchers are finding new ways of replacing damaged organs with synthetic alternatives. Here are few of the most incredible artificial organs being researched today.
Hearts
Hearts
Artificial hearts have been around for a long time, with successful models dating back as far as the 1960’s. Even today, however, these organ replacements are only temporary, and are primarily meant to keep a patient alive while they await a transplant. But technological advancements are bringing permanent artificial replacements closer to reality. The AbioCor (above), a totally self-contained artificial heart, kept one patient alive for 514 days, while another device developed by a French transplant specialist is expected to be used as an alternative to heart transplants by 2013.

… And when you can’t pay your bill for your new bionic implants, the Repo Men will come-a-knocking.
I was just thinking about that man! XD
Pffft have it done in Canada where it wouldn’t cost a thing anyway :P
Sure because we are suckers that pay taxes over our heads to support the none working smokers and A—-oles from other countries who get Health Cards 3 months after establishing Refugee status. Jerk
You still blame Immigrants for your demise! Wake up and maybe you will understand why they end up in our own backyard.. We take, take and take and when people end up here, we whine! CRY BABY!
are you a smoker? you know what the cigarettes do to you lungs?
For one, we all pay taxes. People who smoke, pay tax on cigarettes. Ever wonder why cigarettes are so expensive in Canada and cheap in the United States? Because that money goes to the gov’t as tax revenue which funds … Healthcare…. get it?
As for the refugees, when they work, they pay their taxes too. Theres plenty of tax revenue, and we all contribute in one way or another, as the government makes sure of that.
How about closing your face and stop whining already; You make yourself look like an idiot.
FREE…. I don’t know where you got your info.
let me tell you, you don’t think it costs anything here for our health care and that things are free, boy you are mistaken. We are charged out our ying yang with taxes of all kinds, yes, we do have a better health care system then the U.S. but it is far from free. Why do people always think health care is free
I live in BC and pay a Thousand $ a Year for health Care ,
Is that all
Yeah! But you would be on a waiting list for 5 years. In the states $$$ gets you in and out fast and alive.
For the right money you can have anything anywhere anytime. That includes real bodyparts as well.
@ hailbop
well, as a canadian, id say this, canada aint cheap, and things are not always free, in fact, making a living is so hard, in that country, are you canadian or just someone in the outback of the country.
dont over generalize a country
don’t,
ok, i sound like a nerd
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET YOUR HEART BROKEN BY THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE? TAKE THE BATTERIES OUT?
kill yourself
I wish they would make a whole body you could just put your head on,then you could change it to suit your needs and appearance.
Hilarious,,,I’m down with you on that! Love your sense of humour!
give it time
NOPE! They remotely block your account…
what the heck are you talking about
Amazing and fantastic! The world gets more wonderful the more we understand and know about it.
sounds son nerdy
Yeah and if yo dont have the $$ when he comes knockin he will take the arm or leg – whichever back.
Fantastic! This is an incredible advance on limb extension. However, is it something that would be applicable to an older person. I feel it will work with a child as it can be extended as they grow. An adult on the other hand will be a different set of circumstances as their limb growth will be quite limited and well established, if for instance they had one limb much shorter than the other. I am a person who has has heart surgery.I had to have five by-passes.
A young surgeon and wonderful nurses saved my life. Likely 20 years ago,my surgery couldn’t have been accomplished. My heart specialist told me that that operation cost $10,000.00. I did not pay that, it was covered by healthcare. Canadian taxpayers paid for my surgery, and I would like to say that I am very grateful, and thanks to all of you.Healthcare should be a priority all over the world, and advancements in the health field should always be encouraged and supported. To those that are bringing hope to people every day, I would like to say thank you and congratulations on your achievements . John Shmuir Brantford Ontario
Yeah, Brantford!
Hear!! Hear!! My son most recently has found out he has degenerative eye desease,(maternal side) he’s only 13yr old. My heart aches for him and truly hope that this advancment in technology would benefit him.
I am not sure if an artificial heart will solve that problem.
well it will fix your broken heart
Yes OHIP is GREAT i hab boath my knee replace and now i am golfing 18 hole and walking it
Has it ever occured to you that this problem was caused by to much golfing in the first palce.
i agree with joe:)
no problem man :)
Had 6 by-pass in 1998. Was informed that the surgery lasted 6 hours, and if I had had to pay it would have been at a cost of $40,000.00 Thank you OHIP, and I am glad I live in Canada.
So thats why my healthcare premiums went up …. YOUR WELCOME!!! lol jk good for you.
Science and technology go hand in hand for the preservations and extensions of life!
Just use it wisely for the betterment of mankind and their existence in the planet Earth!
The challenge for today’s generation is how to prevent Earth erosions, the melting of the ice cap and the astroid explosions?
Cheer’s
are you a science teacher?
Why do we insist on life no matter what.We are born to die.Artificially extending life so that we become a burden on society as a whole is insanity and will lead to the destruction of us all.
No artificial heart,no expensive medications,no interventions will prevent death.Instead of spending so many resources on extending life past it’s natural design, why do we not spend our money and resources on bettering the day to day life we have BEFORE we become a useless burden.
RS – your an idiot, if I needed a new heart right now to survive, I can tell you without a doubt, that at 31 years old – I would jump at the offer.
Maybe if I were 80+, It would not be so important to me, but plenty of people die young. There is still tons of space left on earth, so lets help em live longer.
Shadow i am 82 and in great health and wil accept aney new part that i kneed to live a longer life
people in government does not like you — but i must congratulate you and wish you a longer life. :)
Well excuse R.S for telling like it is. You see all the sience and technology that they are coming up with is fine but for one thing. You see when your time has come to go, none of that will save your sorry ass. It dosen’t matter how old you are, you can be six or sixty six, or a hundred and six. You see Shadow, I’m 74 I could live into my ninety’s or I could croak to-morrow.And as for you hey if you want them put a bunch of metal part’s in you go for it, I’d like to see ifyou are going to creamate you. There lies a bit of a problem I’m sure.No I think I’ll just go with all the orginal parts I came with.
My son died 4 days after his 30th birthday,
from harty failure 10 years ago, with science making such advances young people will not have to die way too soon
Dear RS
I became a useless burden at 19 due to genetics.
My life has been saved by an implanted defibrillator
(three to date actually). You’re saying that the money used to keep me alive should have been spent on you bettering your day to day life?
hi both and all of you are right whos anyone to say that ones answer is better than others. when ppl are old and it is thier time they will go, you cant replace the brain! so they can run a marathon if they could remember where to go lol. Jk but i am in sask. and am 21, if a lilttle boy or girl or a thirty year old man or wemon who has lived thier life right and just has a bad heart or something should get that oppertuinty to live, but that is not nature and of course there are reprocussions* for it. if we didnt want people to stay alive then we wouldnt be telling the truth, the fact is we are all selfish and are people if we destroy the earth so what its sad and not ideal but it is ours to destroy. / OR ENJOY! get it lol
I will say this… R S is either drunk or does not know what he’s talking about, if he was faced with a heart problem he’d probably would choose to get an implant, but who am I to say, everyone chooses how to survive, but no one chooses on how to live, with all fast food every where an such a little time to eat due to pressure at work, or school there are higher percentage of people developing different health problems, as Humans we are the ones destroying our own environment, and no it is sad that we are destroying our earth, but it is not ours to destroy like you said, it is ours to look after to cherish for next generations, save the earth, by not trowing away in the garbage what ever can be recycled. For Us and Our children we all should work together to save MOTHER EARTH… I would give my heart if i new some close friend or relative needed it that is being Human not ignorant… Yes that means you R S
maybe….
I agree wholeheartedly with RS. The human race as a whole is becoming weaker as science and technology are finding more ways of fighting disease and using artificial means to keep people alive. I feel for people that have disease or lose children/parents etc. but we cannot afford to keep up at the present pace. If we don’t keep the planet alive with our limited resources we have nothing.
Since their are fewer & fewer resources & more & more people maybe people that complain about all this stuff should start thinking about what some of us that are intelligent do ….& stop procreating!
There are enough people in this world now, their are children without parents, animals (pets) we keep spaying & neutering while we encroach upon what should be “their” habitat to build more houses for more people.
The only insane people are “human beings” that don’t actually have the brains to do the right thing & stop procreating.
Perhaps women need to take the lead here since we have been led down the garden path of men’s version of economics which is to knock up every woman within breathing distance to advance their own wealth while women are nothing but exploited & uncompensated for giving a method of survival to a gender that doesn’t treat us equally & had no method of valuing women’s work (within the home & vehicle to the survival of all humankind)and instead pocketed all the money for themselves.
Just a thought, wise up women!
What do you mean by “useless” burden”…? clarify please…
that is just rediculous RS, the right to life is paramount to most of us as humans, however if you are so cold hearted why not just do us all a favor and donate your organs to society and do your part to decrease the surplus population mr scrooge.
RS your statments obviously show a lack of understanding of the path were takeing in regard of medical sciences, The developmental goal of these inventions (which are in their infancy still) are to extend the life span of humans while allowing for the same quality of life which includes productivity, because though there are many people who are lazy and will take handouts, there are still many of us (including myself)who become misrable when we feel useless and cannot earn our own keep. Many of those withen my fathers generation work well into senority until forced to retire for fear of them hurting themselves or having a medical emergency on the company’s dime. The ability to shead these damaged body parts (in the near future) will allow us to remain usefull well beyond the current years of the human life span and will also be a huge staple in our races foray into spacial colonization. Between the expected travel times, body decay with lack of gravity, harsh conditions we expect, and not to mention reasource aquirement in environs where human life would currently be non-sustainable, and the fact that artifical organ/limb replacements would be the easiest (and most likely the only realistic) way to deal with serious injuries in the limited population of these colonies (just try and find a doner soon enough… though granted organ growth is also a near future alternative ). So in these advancements are one of the most pivitol in medical science and it’s contributions to the furthuring of humanity, it’s just to bad there are so many who are so short sighted to see this.
I am agreeing with MB. I am 47yr old woman that also have an implanted defibrillator. It has saved my life a numerous times and for that I am greatful. I don’t consider myself or any one else that require medical intervention and mechanical devices in order to live. Life is precious and shouldn’t be taken for granted. For those of us that lead full and productive lives because we have technology on our sides we appreciate and savor every moment we have left to spend with our love ones. I am a single mother of a 12 year old child, wouldn’t it be more of a burden for him to be orphaned and have to depend on the system and child welfare to raise him than a loving mother, who by the way does work for a living. As my heart deteriorates I may need a heart transplant and if one doesn’t become available I would love to think I have another option to extend my life. I’m a mother that wants to see her child graduate H.S, college , dance at his wedding and see the birth of his children.
We need to decress the surplus population. Lets start with all you defibs. This will cut down on green house gases! So we can all breath
better!!!!
RS,BY THE WAY YOU SOUND YOU ARE A VERY INSENSITIVE PERSON,do you maybe think we should just do away with every person that is no longer 100per cent PERFECT….USELESS BURDEN we should start with you…i do not know you but you sound like a prize..i hope GOD grants you your wish and puts you out of your pathetic miserable life
I actually want him to live a very long life, and him to become a “useless burden” and I hope someone reminds him of that when it is his time, and makes sure he knows that he is a useless burden. Everyone chooses life, even people that hang themselves at the last second try to pull the noose off their necks in an attempt to save their own life. No one wants to die, and I am sure RS will realize that one day; even if it might be at the last second of his life.
nice one,nina
I already tried.. But I could not drink enough. Know I am in a rehab. That your tax dollars are draining you of. Just so I can do it all over again. This is rehab #5.. 90days in heaven.. All you can eat.Etc.. Were will I spend the summer?
So a child who gets a heart defect or some other kind of disease should die to suit your needs right? You are a moron. As far as useless burdens many older people are still fully functional citizens and have more than earned their right to live out their days. I’m sure you are the kind of person who would vote to have people executed at a date of their lives so we could harvest their organs and such. You are probably some 15 year old punk who read a science book one day and saw someone else tell you what you just regurgitated. You obviously can’t think of the whole picture and are far too ignorant to even think of something as complex as artificial organs. Do us all a favor and go back to your spongebob you fail wanna be genius.
since when did children get heart problems, isn’t it 70+ that gets them?
just so you know, the point of these artificial organs and extending peoples lives is so they are not a burden on society, I’d rather someone get an artificial heart and go back to work and pay taxes than having them being sick and miserable and collecting government cheques, as for old people. they deserve to live, and they are not a burden, they paid into a retirement fund and are merely getting the money back, so they aren’t a burden either. I am guessing you have never lost a loved one that was close to you or you wouldn’t be here typing what you did there.
You just hit the nail right on the head buddy. You can say that again. I will not let anyone install any artificial parts in my body. I’m almost over the hill and spend most of it trying to cope with the new parts. Thanks, but no thanks.
Talk to us again when you are 70 if you ever make it that far.
bobsleding! yeah who cares if it crash, we’ll just die, fun!
you mean like that?
Interesting point RS, but I suppose the questions lies rooted in the human fear of death. And if you were going to die and you knew it, would you not do anything to live longer? Besides, conforming to natures standards is boring. Screw conformity.
Well at least with the skin product they won’t be needing baby boys foreskin’s.
What a retarded thing to say.
Where do you think the collagen matrix came from? :)
what a f**KWIT !
what do you mean they use baby boy’s foreheads
@ RS — I understand your point. However, not all these inventions are meant to drag out the life of someone who has reached the end of their independence, and who continue to be will be a societal dead weight. For example, with the prosthetic hands or eyes, someone who is handicapped and reliant on others could become independent and be able to work again. If seriously sick or disabled people can become contributing members of society, that would be a serious benefit — especially since in such cases, they would not die without the technology, but merely continue to need resources and care.
I think that these advances are great, and it’s wonderful that people are willing to devote their intelligence and energy to help other people and make their lives better!
I always wonder, at the point when they become better than natural body parts, will people remove body parts to get prosthetics?
I know for a fact I expect to replace many of my internal organs by the time i’m 60 years old because I want to be able to keep up with the younger folks when I get up there, I don’t have the ability to justify living off of government aid and help from my family, no matter how much I’ve done for them in the past.
WTG
Don’t we do that already? It’s called plastic surgery, it’s just not this complex.
nobody gets plastic surgery, plus, it’ll put me off the soccer team when i try to recover.
excellent insight R S,
that’s why the people who run the world are planning a thorough cleansing..
there’s no way the masses of humanity are prepared (emotionally or “spiritually” etc) for the benefits of advanced technology..
just look at the posters, for lack of a better term, ‘attacking’ you,
people always feel entitled to the best of anything humanity has to offer, but tend to lack any responsibility or comprehensive view of their role in things..
they simply ‘demand’ the best of anything regardless of if the person next to them is deprived of their most basic needs..
within these comments alone are the seeds of why humanity needs some.. ‘cataclysmic’ changing events.. – no matter of your worth, a person always expects the ‘best’ (universal healthcare etc) but can’t get along with the person next to them (note selfish shallow comments) and they can’t seem to grasp there’s no way you can have 7 billion people all demanding the rights to have multiple children and live a materialistic lifestyle etc etc..
read the signs.. they are given to you all over..
don’t know who you are or what color you maybe or your religion or your political views etc, but all I need to know about you is you have COMMON SENSE akenaton, and although this may leave you feeling alone much of the time don’t worry you are not alone and very likely would be chosen to “live on” in a eutopian society if it ever could exist! It is so hard when the people you have love couldn’t give a you know what about the very basic human need to care and love in a responsible way for all the life we find ourselves surrounded by, could go on and on but I’ve said enough and sure anyone who could know already feels they do!
You are so frightfully right
These is incredible. Yet the question which has surely crossed people’s minds is what about using these as sport performance enhancers? Is this a possibility of the future, and what of olympic regulations then? Do humans have to be completely non robotized to participate?
Synthetic Skin, has the science of Darkman finally come true?
You can’t fool Mother Nature, she has Father Time on her side.
Diversity demands responsibility, of which, humans have no comprehention.
There was no creation. A genealogical evolution, through eternity, is how Mother Nature and Father Time keep this universe turning on it’s axis.
We humans can only comprehend, greed, and reproduction, which is the cheapest form of entertainment, and with these two traits, we can not build or destroy anything exept our selves. The hundred and fifty thousand years we have been standing upright, is a grain of sand in Father times frame, and we will be long gone, like the animals who’s bones we find that were alive millions of years ago. Our comrehention is immediate, where Mother Nature’s is ever lasting. GOOD BYE CRUEL WORLD!!!!!
Spruceles you too sound like some little kid who regurgitated what you heard from someone else. You seem to be a misanthropic half wit who has no faith in humanity. Humanity is capable of great things but you choose to only look at what happens to help your case. What about all the compassion and care people offer others thru Red Cross and other such organisations. I suppose they don’t count since you don’t hear about them all the time. It’s also quite obvious you only watch tv and therefore only see the darker side of humanity since that is what is sensational and newsworthy. Crawl out of your mothers basement and go see the real world before you cast your ignorant judgement. I have personally seen some of the darkest aspects of our race and yet there is still a bright side to it all regardless. Anyways go back to being a tool…
and your point was????
8D
Amazing inventions – you’ll never know when you need one, that’s when you’ll fully appreciate them.
RS – your idea is sound it is your delivery that retards your point.
Skin has been made for several decades and I’ve seen them grow livers and lungs out of petri dishes
I just want to know what happened to the research in to growing new replacement body parts. I was watching a show where the researchers had used a laser printer filled with plasma to make the structure of the heart.
Although if these artifical parts are going to be made in China or India. I think I’d rather suffer.
The research you’re looking for may have been privatized. So many privacy laws now compared to yesteryear.
Hey!
Hello you are an ignorant! along whit RS retard and a bunch of others, all of you gays should go an instruct your selves in what really means to be a human, what are we made of eh!, everybody has a pourpes in this life, if we are able to live in any condition good or bad health we suposed to be here, hey maybe all this peoples that are repliying to your coments are supposed to be here to teach you how to be a better person, have simpathy, have compation, learn to serve others and most importantly BE HUMBLE, look if I ever need a hart to keep my life going I’ll be greatfull to be patch same how , but please not with your hart that will provably wiil kill me for shure.
About inmigrant people, I know mamy that are tax payers and live a very honest hard working life, people that focus their lives in their families and do good to society risig honest hard working studious individuals sons and dougther for this their new home Canada.
This kind of people made me PROUD TO BE CANADIAN , no you,.
Tray to be better remember that at one point in your life you wiil need something from somebady!
do you ever read what you write?
dude,i was going to use hello for my name, i use hello for everything
RS – Just let me tell you something…
Imagine that you have children, no matter their number you love them all. One of them is getting sick, your going to the hospital and they tell you that your child suffer from X illness that can’t be cured. Your… let’s say 12 years old child… is going to die. If there was a single chance that such technology could save him and offer him the oportunity to live a full life, would you tell yourself “hey just like everyone he’s going to die someday, that’s just too bad for him” or take that chance and save his life? Don’t you think he’d like to live what he was born for? I understand that such technology is useless for old people but some of us are still young and have their own life to live for. Don’t you think we deserve a chance?
Linda Whyard – Human race getting weaker? Sorry that is a lie. A few years ago, life expectancy level was really low in comparison to today. We live much longer than before.
Limited ressources? Sorry I believe you are wrong once again. Everyday we find new ways to extend these ressources. They may not be natural, but act in the same way so everyone can enjoy it.
Sorry for my bad english, I tried to explain my point of view in the best way I could.
Jonathan
Very Cool! Bt now the question is, could a person have all these things at once, or rather, could you build a person out of all these things?
Hey RS, I had cancer when I was 13, and due to unnatural intervention from some very skilled doctors my life was spared. A lot of money, time, and energy was put into changing the course that nature had intended for me 23 years ago. Keep your negative opinions to yourself, as there are people out there that do not need to die pointlessly, and may actually take offense to your nihilistic point of view.
Hey there survivor….
Feel good thinking about all those in, say, Africa, that are dying of starvation, and the amount of money that it took to keep your angry little soul alive?
Hey anonymous you coward.. First off get a real handle instead of a random one cause you are too scared to show who you are. And as for Africa you can blame all your politicians and corruption in Africa for that. If they weren’t forced to pay back tons of money they wouldn’t harvest the hell out of their land and therefor turn it into a dust bowl. That’s why they are in poverty and aids is infesting since some guy with a tall hat said condoms are bad. Also what have you done personally anonymous? Haveyou helped the poor in Africa or are you some internet troll sitting at home calling the kettle black? Grow some balls and screw off.
You sound like a neger. I think? Or just nuts? NEGRO.BOY
You are absolutely a sick individual, hope nothing like that happens to you or any of your friends or family, oh wait…….psychopaths like you don’t give a crap!
Absolutely! I’m glad you made it.
As for Anonymous, who seems to be trying to make the point that he resents the idea of Africans dying but not you — or that your family should have spent money on strangers rather than their own child — ignore him. He’s probably a troll.
