New ‘Mortal Kombat’: Fun, but mega violent
The latest in the 19 year-old franchise is now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 — ‘Mortal Kombat’ is back and more brutal than ever.
As with its popular — but controversial — predecessors, the new Mortal Kombat game has you choose a fighter from a roster, each with their own unique abilities, and pit them against rival characters in an arena.
Familiar fighters have returned, such as Scorpion, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Kitana, and Raiden, as well as new fighters (including Kratos from the “God of War” games — on the PlayStation 3 version only).
By punching, kicking, blocking, chaining combo moves, and using weapons (guns, swords) and special powers (such as fire and lightning), you must defeat your opponent before he or she can do the same to you. You know the drill.
Once your rival fighter is on his or her last legs, you can perform a brutal “fatality” move to finish him or her off in a violent, over-the-top fashion. And boy, you haven’t quite seen them this gory before. This might be ripping their spine out, tearing them in half or electrifying them – and seeing the effect on their insides with the new X-Ray feature. As a result of all the violence, blood and gore, parents should keep this game far away from kids and young teens. The fact the game is in high-definition (and on the PlayStation 3 version, available in 3D on compatible televisions), these fatality moves are even more graphic.
But it’s hard to deny the game is fun — especially for fans of the franchise. Along with a lengthy story mode, there are also quick battles, tag-team options (the first for a Mortal Kombat game), online games (such as the “King of the Hill” spectator mode), co-op arcade mode (for two players on the same television) and a Challenge Tower which has the player perform 300 different challenges.
If you don’t cringe easily, the new Mortal Kombat is a lot of fun as it offers a lot of breadth and depth for fans of the series — just take heed to the “Mature” rating that suggests the game is suitable for players age 17 years of age or older.

It is Mortal Kombat and I am sure it is rated M. Mortal Kombat is not Mario Kombat. It is supposed to be violent.

Hahaha, props to mortal kombat for having the guts remind everyone what they do best. They may not make the deepest fighting game but they sure as hell know how to make the trip one bloody ride.

It’s a great game, but I agree keep it away for the young ones.
