As I write this, yours truly is traveling to San Francisco, eager to see (and touch) what new hardware and/or services Apple will unveil in the AM. Sync readers can visit us at 10am Pacific sharp (1pm Eastern) on Wed., September 1, to be the first to know what Steve Jobs has up the ‘ol proverbial sleeve.

If you haven’t been following all the pre-event hype, the rumour mill is predicting everything from new iPods (including new iPod touch devices with a Retina display and dual cameras — just like the iPhone 4) to iOS4 support for the iPad to Garage Band for the iPad to — my favourite out of the bunch — Apple iTV, a new box to connect to your television (a la Apple TV) that lets you stream content instead of having to download it first (the way you do it today).

Buzz surrounds Netflix and Hulu support, but that leaves Canada out of the loop, if that’s the case.

On a related note, a “cloud”-based iTunes — one you can access on any online computer (through a browser), as well as iPhone, iPad or iPod touch — would certainly be a major step forward compared to the software-based iTunes store of today. and how cool would it be if you could access all of your media from virtually any device?

But again, the guitar in the invitation is supposed to be a hint, so we shall see what’s unveiled in a few short hours from now. Can you feel the excitement in the air?

Keep your browser locked on Sync for all the latest!

Readers, are you looking forward to the event? Will you be following the news? Are you a huge Apple fan or do you think the company and their products are overrated? Let’s hear from you in the Comments section below.

Update, 11:40 AM (Simon Cohen): In an unprecedented move, Apple is for the first time ever, video-streaming this event through Apple.com. One catch though: If you’re on a non-Apple device e.g. Windows or Linux or non-Apple smarphone e.g. Android or BlackBerry, you’re out of luck. If you want to watch, Apple says:

Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™.

I’m not crazy about the fact that Apple is cutting out such a large chunk of potential viewers, but I have two theories as to why: First, I doubt their streaming infrastructure could handle the massive load that a wider Wind0ws-based audience would create. Keeping it restricted to Mac users keeps the audience (relatively) small. Second, I suspect that this broadcast is tied to whatever Apple is announcing today – likely in the realm of TV and on-demand streaming. Stay tuned.

Wait a moment – this just in: Tech blog Mascobz.com is suggesting a way that you might (unverified) be able to tune in on a non-mac device.

If I had to pick one thing I’d like to see from Apple with this announcement it would be moving iTunes to the Web to make it accessible on any computer or device. It is a pain to setup your iTunes library to be accessible on multiple computers & mobile devices for your family in your home.

    Hi Marc:

    Looking forward to your updates.

It would be nice, as Thomas said, to have iTunes cloud based for the times you are away from home and need access to your library of stuff. Sort of like having Mobile Me in the cloud as well as on my iPhone and desktop computer having iTunes clouded based is just an extra way to make sure you have a ‘backup’ of your iTunes Library along with convenience of accessing it anywhere.

As to being a ‘fanboy’ – yes and no. I say ‘yes’ as I do like a lot of products from Apple and just presently own the iPhone 3GS with the hopes this fall to upgrade my computer to a iMac and get a iPad. My reason for these is only because at this time I feel it is the best route to go. I have had Apple products in the past and owned or built various Windows based computers. Take the iPad for example and this is where my ‘no’ comes in. Yes, I am hoping to get one, but if a company came along and offered a product that had the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of the iPad and could offer the same user experience then it would be a toss up. Presently there isn’t anything and come later this fall we shall see what the market offers – iPad v2.0 or something else.

All the best while at the Apple Media Event.

Do the math it is cheaper to buy satellite or cable for all the programs and there are no possible data charges from the ISP.

Marc? Why is my comment for “HT August 31, 2010 at 4:11 pm Q&A: Is ‘ransomeware’ for real?” Shown up in this totally unrelated blog and “Your comment is awaiting moderation.”
