Question: How do I back-up my BBM contacts?
Julie R. from Etobicoke, Ont. Asks: “I liked your article on all the things you can do with BlackBerry Messenger, but I heard there was a way to back-up your contacts if you lose your phone. How do you do it?”
Thanks, Julie. Here’s the blog post on these 5 little-known features, if anyone else missed it.
As someone who has lost a BlackBerry or two over the years (the last time it was stolen from a kid’s birthday party at someone’s house…can you believe it?), it’s a good idea to back-up your BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) contacts from time to time, so that you don’t have to manually input them all again.
At least it’s a very simple process. Here’s what to do:
1. Open the BBM program, which might be in your Instant Messaging folder.
2. Now press the Menu key (to the left of your trackball or trackpad, the one with the seven little white dots on it) and select Options from the list. It’ll be down near the bottom.
3. Once inside the Options area, scroll down until you see “Save a copy of your contact list” and click on the blue Back Up tab to the right of this.
4. Now you can choose to back-up your BBM contacts remotely — securely stored on RIM’s servers and associated with your email address (if you need to recover them later) or you can back them up onto a removable microSD card instead. For the latter, select the option that says “Back up files locally.”
Keep in mind, you can also back-up BBM contacts using Desktop Manager on a computer.
Now, if you ever replace your old BlackBerry with a new one, simply repeat this process and instead of selecting Back Up from the Options list, click on Restore, and you’re good to go!

I am a serious BlackBerry addict, and I’ve used a number of ways to backup my contacts in the past. Very solid tips Marc, it’s easy to read and follow. Currently, I’ve been using Syncables for everything sync…it’s the best sync solution on the market, and it syncs all of my contacts (I have my BlackBerry contacts saved on my netbook) between my netbook and 2 other laptops. Because they are automatically backed up and up-to-date on multiple computers, I rest assuredly that I’ll always have access to my contacts.
While it syncs all of my media and folders between computers and has some other neat features as well, I thought it was appropriate to share my specific use-case for backing up my contacts.

Hi,
Your article is very helpful, only problem is, my BBM doesnt have “Save a copy of your contact list” option.
Can i assume your article relates to new series Blackberrys. I have a 8300 (i think – its about 3 years old, grey colour, two tone keyboard etc).
Is there any way of backing up BBM contacts from the 8300? The Desktop Software doesnt seem to have an option to take across the contact list.
Thanks
Anthony
