Walk and Text With Samsung’s Galaxy

By Comments (8)

Samsung’s Road SMS application allows Android smartphone users to text and walk at the same time by displaying a live view from the camera, augmented with an SMS application.

Road SMS By Samsung

Take a walk through downtown Toronto, New York or London and most likely, you’ll see people in business attire, walking around with their eyes glued to their screens and their thumbs twiddling away.

Some people are so oblivious, it takes a blaring horn to break them out of the trances.

A few years ago, Canada’s Rick Mercer Report made a video parody of the “BlackBerry Helmet”, a camera-equipped helmet that allows BlackBerry users to see where they’re going as they continue to look down at their ever-present devices.

Samsung has now turned imagination into reality and updated it to reflect the latest capabilities of today’s Android smartphones. On its Galaxy S, the phone will display a live view from the camera and superimpose a keyboard on top, allowing users to see what’s in front of the phone while continuing to use it. Check out the video below.

Are you a text addict?

Walking and chew gum at the same time is a challenge for too many peoples. So, txting and e-mailing while walking in the down town is dangerous for the rest of us for sure. Doing this is the new sign for stupid peoples.

Very STUPID idea, why promote it when it will be illegal before it comes out. More STUPID people will want to do this while driving, a no, no and companies that promote garbage like this will not survive for long, bottom line

fancy but also pathetic. this will have some people think they can use this to text while driving or walking, not realizing it’s not sight that counts but concentration. If you want to look more like a tool walking down the street with one of these glued to your face and fingers then….:/

A very, very dangerous idea. A person’s distracted enough when they’re walking and texting, I’ve seen far too many people walk into traffic not paying attention at crosswalks because they’re staring at their phones. This will just encourage more people to do more of the same, and I can only imagine what would happen with drivers trying to use this feature. If anything the cell manufacturers should be installing warning messages if it detects you’re texting while moving, something similar to the warnings gps devices show; it may not do much but it might at least make people more aware of their surroundings.

While I seriously doubt that this application was created with the intent of allowing people to drive while texting, it is not up to the manufacturer to police what people do with their devices. It is already illegal to actively use any electronic device without hands-free capability in many provinces and states.

I know that when I activate Google Maps Navigation on my Android phone, I get a disclaimer similar to the one that appears when first activating portable dashboard GPS devices.

At the end of the day, it’s just common sense.
