Download Star Wars voices to your TomTom

By Comment (1)

“Luke, I’m your father. And turn right in 100 metres.” OK, so perhaps this isn’t exactly what you’ll hear after downloading TomTom’s new Star Wars voice pack — featuring Darth Vader — but GPS nav users might get a kick out of what’s now available.

Darth VaderWant a Sith Lord for your dashboard? Want some Force for your Ford?

TomTom today announced a deal with Lucasfilm and VoiceSkins.com, allowing owners of TomTom-branded navigation units to download official Star Wars voices for their device for the first time.

Sith Lord Darth Vader is the first of four Star Wars downloads available this summer for US $12.95 apiece — followed by C-3PO in June, Yoda in July and Han Solo in August — each of which adds familiar character voices to your turn-by-turn directions.

Darth Vader, for example, might say “Bear left, to the dark side. Then in 200 yards you have reached your destination. The Force is with you, but you are not a Jedi yet.”

Yes, these are sound-a-likes rather than the real actors, but if Darth’s voice is any indication, they’re very, very good (great, now James Earl Jones won’t send me a Christmas card). A disclaimer on the TomTom website says “The Stars Wars voices were created by the team at VoiceSkins.”

Another caveat: these voice packs will only work with standalone TomTom nav units and not the TomTom iPhone app.

Sound effects from the films are also incorporated, such as lightsaber hums and soaring TIE fighters. John Williams’ orchestral music, including the iconic Imperial March, is also peppered throughout the navigation instructions.

For free, TomTom owners can also download warning alert sounds voiced by Darth Vader, along with free start-up screen wallpaper and Lord Vader map icon.

All Star Wars voices are available in English only, but with further languages available throughout the summer.
