Huh? What do I do with an .NRG file?
From the mailbag: JP from Montreal has downloaded a .NRG file and he doesn’t have anything on his computer that can open it. A quick Google search also didn’t give him any clear answers, says JP. No problem, we can help.
Ever downloaded a .NRG file and had no clue what to do with it?
Quite simply, a file with the .NRG extension is a CD image file, usually generated by a program like Nero Burning ROM, or by similar software that can mount NRG files onto virtual drives (such as Alcohol 120%, MagicISO or Daemon Tools) or used to create and burn ISO CD images.
While there are legitimate applications for creating an .NRG file (pronounced “energy”), these file formats are popular on file-sharing sites, such as those that host BitTorrent files.
If you downloaded a .NRG file and want to run the program within, you’ll need a program like the aforementioned MagicISO (which is what I use) or Nero Burning ROM, and so on.
Most of these programs that let you open an .NRG file offer a free trial, but they might be limited in some capacity. For example, MagicISO will only let you expand and burn the contents of an .NRG file to a recordable CD/DVD up to 300MB in size.
Mac users can open an .NRG file on an Apple computer using Roxio Toast for Mac.
On a related note, Sync recently posted a blog entry on how to access .CUE and .ISO files.

It’s a FREE conversion tool for NRG to ISO.
ISOs can be read natively in Windows 7 or extracted using WinRAR (http://www.rarlabs.com/).
Sweet, thanks Jeremy! No malware?
