How to convert DVD or video files for playback on iPhone/iPod Touch
When you need to convert or rip video files from your computer or DVD, use Handbrake to get the job done.
HandBrake is a free program that converts common video formats into mobile and YouTube-friendly formats like .mp4 or .mkv. It works for Linux, Mac OS, and Windows, making it easy to package video content on either platform. HandBrake can take hours of videos spread across several DVD discs and condense them into formats that will make them easy to watch on a computer or mobile device like an iPhone. Other video files stored on the computer that need to be converted from AVI, WMV, etc. can also be loaded into the program and changed to fit your desired format.
Though Sync has previously shown how to rip DVD’s or use VLC to get selected clips, HandBrake has the advantage of ripping specifically for mobile formats and not requiring real-time recording. This method eliminates one step of the conversion process and is faster if you are converting specifically for playback on iPhones (MP4 files are also supported on Android). HandBrake also supports user-controlled bit rates (quality and speed), audio quality, subtitles, chapter selection, and converting multiple files at once.
Handbrake is available for free download and use at http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php Download the program whenever you’re ready to start converting your digital library.
Note: The only catch to using HandBrake is that it requires a minimum of a 1024 x 620 resolution, so some netbook owners may have trouble using the program.
