Facebook (finally) lets you reply via email
It’s one of those things I just didn’t *get* in Facebook: you receive an email notification about a new message sent by a friend but you have to log back into Facebook just to reply. Not anymore.
I never understood why you could read a Facebook message you received via email (in, say, Outlook), but you could never reply to it using your favourite email program.
I figured the Facebook folks wanted us to log in again to reply — but it was a waste of time and detracted from what you might be doing at the time (other than “Facebooking”).
Finally, Facebook got it right.
Now, when you get an email that says you’ve received a Facebook message (or comment on your status or photo), you can now click Reply and type in your response. And yes, it’ll show up in Facebook, too.
It’s about time!
Have you used this handy new Facebook feature yet (which works on both PCs and smartphones)?
Anything else you’d like Facebook to fix?

You commend facebook for change? Finally you say?
What about your website? Huh!
My biggest pet peeve is arriving on a website like yours on my phone and being FORCED to navigate in the mobile format.
Hello! We are in the smartphone age. The finally should apply to your website.
Hey Rick, thanks for the comment. Can I assume you’re on an iPhone? For most mobile users, the optimized version is a whole lot easier to deal with (You should see the non-optimized version on a BlackBerry – it ain’t pretty). But I recognize that some might prefer it – I’ll look into getting that option added.
Cheers,
Simon.
Hey , thanks for your valuable information . I stumbled upon this webpage . I have a blackberry . I receive regular email notifications from facebook . The emails also say ” reply to this email in order to reply to the post/comment ” . I try replying and the post never ends up on facebook . Its a problem on with my blackberry . If i reply through my pc , the comment ends up on facebook immidiately . Please help me . It is quite frustrating .
No one “forces” you to view a mobile site.
Most likely, your browser has an option to view websites as a mobile or a desktop browser — at least my Windows Mobile smartphone does.
The browser does this by changing its “user agent” string.
e.g. Internet Explorer Mobile v6.0 vs Internet Explorer v7.0 [desktop]
Check out http://mybrowserinfo.com/detail.asp to see a detailed list of what information your phone/computer is reporting to the website.
Thank You Simon. Overall, I like the articles.
What most websites do is include a link at the bottom of the mobile site that says something like, ‘regular site’.
Yes, I have an iphone.
C’mon people,play nice.
Can you provide more information on this? So far the info in your post is excellent . In the mean while I think im gonna stick around and read about 3 of your posts. Warm regards
When i reply to a comment, it doesnt show up on facebook! Anyone have any ideas? I tried several times, and have no trouble getting email notifications
Hi Sue,
It only doesn’t work if you log out of Facebook.
Stay logged in — even if you leave the site — and when you get an email notification from a friend you can just hit Reply in the email.
Marc
Ah, I was wondering that myself. It doesn’t actually tell you in the email that you have to be logged into Facebook for it to work.
In which case I wonder why one wouldn’t just switch tabs and reply there.
hi ..
i have tried this method but it just does not work …
could you suggest some other method !!
Hi Lucky,
Are you sure you’re logged into your Facebook account? Don’t log out from the website…
