CES 2010: Two hot new pocket cams debut

If you’re in the market for one of those “Flip”-style pocket-sized camcorders, new models from Sony and Kodak look quite promising, and each catering to different needs and budgets.

A few manufacturers debuted new “Flip”-style Flash-based camcorders

Kodak PlaySportA few manufacturers debuted new “Flip”-style Flash-based camcorders here at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. All of them are about the size of a cell phone yet shoot 1080p HD video (MP4) and feature a flip-out USB connector to plug into a computer for archiving, sharing and/or editing.

Here’s a look at two models that caught my attention, both available this spring:

Sony Bloggie

The Sony Bloggie – as the name suggests – is ideal for bloggers and others who’d like to shoot n’ upload video to the Internet, to sites such as YouTube. This is because the lens is on a 270-degree swivel, so if you like, you can turn it on yourself (and see what you look like on the 2.7-inch LCD screen) and press the red Record button to do your thang.

Due out in March, this $250 digital camcorder will shoot Full HD video at 30 frames per second as well as 5-megapixel still images. Face detection and image stabilization helps reduce blurry shots, while the 4x optical zoom will let you get closer to the subject without moving.

An optional $30 adaptor snaps onto the lens and lets you capture 360-degree panoramic shots, plus that price will include a 4GB Memory Stick, too (the camera also supports SD, too).

The Bloggie will work with both PCs and Macs, says Sony.

Kodak PlaySport

The makers of the awesome Zi8 camcorder have unveiled its clever PlaySport camcorder here at CES, the company’s first underwater digital camcorder –- perfect for capturing good times at the beach or pool.

The $199 white PlaySport will also include easy-to-use buttons to shoot HD video (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) to SD memory cards (sold separately) and of course, the ability to upload to your favourite video sharing site once connected to an Internet-enabled PC.

As with the Zi8, this camcorder will also have image stabilization, integrated editing software and photo capture (even from a still video frame).

Look for this product by April – just in time for opening the cottage.
