Save your wet electronics with a BHEESTIE BAG
Drop your cell phone into the toilet? Accidentally run your iPod through the washing machine? Thanks to the BHEESTIE Bag, there is still some hope of revival.
Recipe for Disaster
Ingredients
- Overexcited kids
- Expensive new electronic gadgetry
- Pop
Mix these traditional Christmas ingredients together and you have disaster waiting to happen. So, what should you do when your kids spill a drink over their brand new digital camera or iPod? Or when you drop your cell phone in the toilet (which, seemingly, is more common than you may think and is something 885,000 Brits do every year!)? One option would be to try the BHEESTIE Bag. The BHEESTIE is simply a pouch that contains water-absorbing beads which suck moisture from the air and – maybe – from your drenched gadget too. The makers of the BHEESTIE Bag do not guarantee success but claim that their bags reduce humidity to a much lower level than other drying methods (such as rice) and manage to get about 96% of submerged electronics working again.
I wasn’t willing to drown an electronic device to see how well the BHEESTIE works but, as they’re only $20 each, they’re certainly worth a shot should disaster strike. The makers of the BHEESTIE Bag also recommend you use their product as routine maintenance to protect your electronics from everyday moisture which, they claim, can cause corrosion and malfunctions. Just purchase some silica gel, either loose or in packets, place in any suitable container. Does the same job and probably cheaper. By the way silica gel can be regenerated a number of times by heating gently in the oven.
While I’m all for saving money, silica gel, especially loose, is a controlled toxic substance, and is probably best used in containers like like this one or in intact pouches. There is a good reason those received with your electronics say “Do not eat”!
A cheaper, non-toxic alternative is dry rice, which also acts as a desiccant.
There are quite a few YouTube videos demonstrating its effectiveness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7lR6HC8Akk
