Samsung unveils M5650 phone aimed at teens

Samsung adds to its already fairly large lineup of touchscreen phones with the new M5650.

Ah, cellphones. It seems nearly everyone and their dog has one these days. With the introduction of the original iPhone in 2007, phones have become more and more advanced and easy to use over the years. Samsung has been making waves lately in that market and has come up with yet another touchscreen phone - the M5650. Built upon the apparent success of the Corby S3650, the M5650 packs several features that should make it appealing for a younger audience (me included.)

One of these is a one-touch key that brings you straight to the MP3 player. The execution, while simple, is better than having to go through menus. There’s quick access to social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, along with the ability to easily upload photos and videos, all on a high-speed 3G (or WiFi, if you want to go that route) connection. Aesthetically it isn’t a bad looking device either, with a bold contoured design, curved edges and a smooth feel.

Other features include a three-megapixel camera on the back, an FM radio, USB 2.0 support, Bluetooth support, One Finger Zooming and a Cartoonish UI. You can choose between either  blue or black colours for the battery cover.

Would I get one of these? Yes, not just because I don’t own a phone, but also because of the social networking features and apparent ease-of-use. If Samsung got everything right, this could make an interesting student phone. I already know several friends who would purchase one of these over an iPhone if they got the chance.

Unfortunately Samsung currently isn’t offering the M5650 here [yet] – it’s available in Portugal and will soon hit other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, India and China. Here’s to hoping that Samsung will eventually release the M5650 here.
