With the proliferation of point & shoot cameras as well as the more complex DSLRs, everyone from grandma to a two-year old can pick up a camera and take a photo.
Digital photography allows the person behind the lens to (generally) not have to worry about wasting film and the worst that can happen is missing a great candid moment.

While some of those who shoot professionally cringe at all the automation that is making its way into photography, consumer-oriented cameras have been steadily adding some very useful features like “smile detection” (some even wait until the subjects are smiling “enough” before taking the photo), in-camera red-eye removal, touchscreens, GPS-tagging, built-in panoramic mode, and high-definition video recording.
