Join Backupify and get free backups of your online accounts
Store important info from Hotmail, Google Docs, Twitter, and more with this free back-up tool.
Due to my past experiences and general paranoia, I’m an advocate of keeping backups of your information. I’ve lost too many documents, family photos, and personally-recorded rare songs to not keep a safe copy of everything on my external hard drives (yes, plural).
Backupify is a great website to utilize for backing-up data kept online. Social networks and web providers generally have their own backups but it doesn’t hurt to have your own protection plan because there’s no guarantee that they will keep your information safe. T-Mobile USA and Danger lost user data a few months ago, and you never know when a Gmail or Hotmail account could be compromised. An alternative option to access important information would be convienent if accounts are damaged or unreachable.
Until January 31, 2010, Backupify is offering “free forever” accounts for new users. While the company eventually plans to introduce a pay model, people who sign-up now can lock-in unlimited storage without having to pay any membership fees. Anyone who joins the ranks of Backupify members will be able to store the information that they keep on the following websites:
- Wordpress
- Delicious
- Basecamp
- Google Docs
- GMail
- Zoho
- Flickr
- Photobucket
- FriendFeed
- Hotmail
There’s a natural concern that having a Backupify account could lead to compromises to your data. If having your Facebook hacked seems troublesome, imagine someone being able to break into Backupify and see your information pulled from sites across the web. As Sync has mentioned in the past, be sure to select a strong, secure password that does not mirror any other password you have on other websites.
