Is Microsoft Security Essentials good enough to be your anti-virus software? Yes.

Recent comparative tests suggest that Microsoft Security Essential is a top free anti-virus software.

When you think anti-virus protection, you think of names like Norton, Avast, and…Microsoft? An anti-malware testing group thinks so, as AV-Comparatives.org says that Microsoft Security Essentials is the best anti-virus program available. Despite being relatively younger than programs from Symantec and McAfee, MSE has earned AV Comparatives top-rating for preventing malware and operating at optimal levels.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-virus program that protects users against malware, spyware, and viruses. It ranks highly in performance and uses less system resources, which helps prevent the sluggishness of more resource-intensive programs. MSE is able to detect and block 98% of known viruses in AV-Comparatives’ database, and is one of only three products to earn their Advanced+ rating.

If Microsoft can earn such high praise for a free application, then why should anyone pay for virus protection? I’ll let you know in a few months because I plan to make the switch to MSE today. Having a free solution that also happens to be one of the highest-rated makes it an easy decision for me. I recommend others who are using free programs from Avast or AVG also give Microsoft Security Essentials a whirl.

Download MSE for Windows XP, Vista, or 7
