Sync, store, and share your bookmarks between several computers with Xmarks
Don’t get caught at work needing a bookmark stored on your home computer. Sync your favourite sites on all computers with Xmarks.
The dreaded moment: that bookmark that you made to help complete an assignment was saved on another computer. The typical way of solving this is to try to remember the address or perform a web search and hope you get back to that specific page; or you can avoid facing this problem again and just sync your bookmarks across computers with Xmarks.
Xmarks is a former Firefox extension that has morphed into a full-fledged plug-in that can also work with Internet Explorer and Safari. (A test version for Chrome is also available but not yet stable.) It provides two-way syncing between computers to make managing bookmarks easier. If someone adds or deletes bookmarks for a web address on their work computer, the change reflects on the home computer and vice versa.
Syncing bookmarks is a great way to always have up-to-date browser information, especially if you perform work at home. Some users may be hesitant to use this function because they don’t want to mix their private bookmarks with their work computer (I can see a long list of embarrassing scenarios here) but users need not worry; Xmarks provides control over which bookmarks will sync, making sure users can keep certain web links private.
Xmark users also get the benefit of:
- Backup and Restore – In the event that a crash or virus prevents you from accessing bookmarks on one computer, Xmarks has backups that users can import onto new computers.
- Mobile Access – If you can’t get to a computer and need to view your bookmarks, the mobile site allows users to access their stored sites
- Sharing – Users can share one link or an entire folder of bookmarks. If you have a co-worker who can use that information, pass the links on easily with Xmarks.
Xmarks is a free application available for download at Xmarks.com. If you perform work at home or simply want to have uniform bookmark libraries between desktop, phone, and laptop, this is a great program to have.

Since installing xmarks 6 months ago, I no longer know how I survived without it. Having my bookmarks (over 500 at last count) available to me on all my computers and all my browsers is a total lifesaver. Consider me a huge fan!

Andrew,
Thanks for the great write-up on Xmarks! Just wanted to let your readers know that we also offer the option to securely sync passwords (for Firefox only).
