Start 2010 rent free by sharing your tenant horror stories

If you live in Toronto and have a renter’s story to tell, sharing it could get you a free month’s rent with a contest by Buyingblock.

Contest for free rentBuyingblock, a company that helps take care of your real estate needs, is running a contest from now until December.31st where, if you win, they’ll pay your January 2010 rent ($1500 maximum). How do you enter? You need to blog about your rental nightmare and get the most votes. You can write your story, show it in a picture, or any other way you see best tells your story, as long as it’s family friendly (so no taking pictures of what your roommate came home with last night!).

I took a closer look at the contest’s rules and there are a few things to note:

1.    You must live in the GTA.
2.    Your entry doesn’t need to be a horror story, nor does it even need to be true! It’s all about the votes. Whether you tell a true story or make it up, anything goes and the most votes wins.
3.    The prize will be awarded only if 100 people or more enter the contest.

There’s also an alternative prize. If you decide you’d rather purchase a home in the GTA, you can opt out of the free rent and instead let Buyingblock pay the closing costs of a new home ($3000 value). They’ll cover the costs of legal fees, home inspection fees, first month’s home insurance, Canada Post redirect costs, and moving costs.

If you’re interested in entering the contest, want to vote, or just check it out further, here’s where to do it.

Correction: Please see first comment below. Looks like you don’t just win one or the other, you get both prizes! Free rent and closing costs paid for should you decide to buy within 12 months of winning. Woot!
