Sony announces Facebook for PlayStation 3

Just one day after Microsoft launches Facebook support on its Xbox Live service, Sony has also confimed the wildly popular social networking service is accessible via PlayStation 3.

copy_of_facebookps3slim580_081709Available today, PlayStation 3 (PS3) owners can download the latest software update for the video game console – v.3.10 — which adds support for Facebook, the mega-popular socuial networking service used by roughly 300 million people worldwide.

Along with reading friend’s profile updates and viewing photos, gamers can share their in-game achievements (called Trophies) and other game info such as PlayStation Network (PSN) store purchases.

But similar to the Xbox Live experience, Facebook users on PS3 cannot send messages, post wall comments or chat via Facebook IM — for those features you’ll need to boot up your PC or launch the mobile version.

Would you use this service?

I think it’s a great idea. A good way to show your friends on Facebook how good the PS3 actually is and a way of marketing.

However, some of the people on Sony’s blog are stating the console should only be used for gaming.

Sony has stated it’s an entertainment console and not just a gaming console and I agree.

I also think its a great idea, but I already have Facebook on my PC and on my Blackberry, at this point I don’t think it’s important to have Facebook on the PS3–considering it has no usable features anyways, can’t chat, can’t post.. What I think Sony should do is to get the movies and music streaming/downloading features up and running especially if they really want to market the PS3 as an entertainment console (maybe in the US things are honky dory and Netflix is working fine, what about us here in Canada, Sony should start negotiating with whoever it is (CRTC, I think) that they need to deal with to get this service operational for Canadians).

    Oi,
