Kid-safe Web game ‘Freaky Pets’ adding plush toy line
Buy the toy, get the game. This is what Abandon Interactive Entertainment is about to announce for Freaky Pets, its upcoming browser-based 3D game for children ages 4 and up.
The Malibu, Calif.-based developer of Freaky Creatures (and co-publisher of Dark Age of Camelot, with Mythic Entertainment) will announce on Monday it has entered an exclusive deal with Hallmark Gold Crown stores to distribute a line of plush toys ($14.99) sometime in early 2010, each of which will include a one-year subscription to the Freaky Pets online game.
The reversible toys, by the way, can be turned inside out, transforming the cuddly creature into a “freaky” one (with wild fur and sharp teeth). Ten different Freaky Pets will be available at launch.
In the game, players can feed and train their pets, before taking them to Pet Town to indulge in mini-games (such as hover racing and memory challenges) and various trick contests against other pets. In-game currency can be earned and spent on pet accessories and other items.
Similar to other child-friendly online games that include a plush toy line, such as Webkinz or Club Penguin, players can also send each other messages and gifts, and deck out their virtual home with items bought from earned credits.
Abandon Interactive Entertainment says the game can be renewed by purchasing another plush toy and entering the code online.

Is there an option to renew the subscription online instead of buying a new toy? We found this to be a real limitation with WebKinz.

Good question, Simon,
Per the last line in the blog post, in order to renew for 12 months you need to buy another $15 plush toy for the code. The company says there is no other way to do it at this time (e.g. software only). Once purchased, it starts the counter at day 1 again (even if you’re only 6 months in).
Best,
Marc

Nice concept… it’s unique from other MMORPG games I’ve played but I think the market will be much younger kids. Is there an option to chat with other players like other MMORPG games? As of now I let my kid play educational games from sites like ClubTuki & YourKidsClub but your concept also looks fun, I think I’m going to check it out to see if I can let my kids play this game alone.
