Your kids could soon race against their favourite race car driver

A new game will soon offer people a way to race in real time against the pros.

Your kids may soon be able to take the wheel of a race car and go head-to-head with the pros in real races in real time. UK-based developers Real Time Race have been working on a game which takes interactivity to a whole new level. Here’s how it works. Real Time Race captures an actual racing circuit in video a few hours before a race. The (real) racing cars are fitted with navigation systems which transmit their positions during the race. Real Time Race’s software collects all this information and, basically, turns it into a real time game. Pretty cool, eh?

To make the games even more real and immersive, Real Time Race may even provide custom commentary to supplement the real commentary – in other words, you’ll hear the commentators talking about your progress as well as the real drivers’ progress – and all in real time.

Real Time Race hope that their gaming system will eventually be extended to cover more than just motorsports: skiing, cycling, yachting – basically, any sport in which people or objects move along or around a race course – could all be turned into a real time game.

But here’s the bad news: you’re going to have to wait for a while the game is available. Real Time Race hope that their technology will be ready for the primetime next year. In the meantime, a demo version is available here.
