Gadgets on the go: The BioLogic FreeCharge will charge your USB device with pedal power

Keeping your USB powered gadget charged while riding your bicycle may become a little easier thanks to the introduction of the BioLogic FreeCharge. Beginning in March, users will be able to power their gadgets simply by pedaling.

biologic_freecharge_charge_hiresFor better or worse, gadgets such as MP3 players, GPS systems and cell phones are becoming common to have while out exercising. Personally, I now carry my iPhone just about everywhere — especially while exercising. My main reason is just to have an easy way to get in contact with a friend or loved one should something happen, but I also keep my iPhone with me because of the Runkeeper Pro app which tracks my progress using the built-in GPS. Of course, anyone who has used a GPS or map application on the iPhone while listening to music will understand that battery life becomes a real issue.

Now thanks to Dahon, a company that is perhaps a little better known for their folding bikes, that issue may soon become a thing of the past. During the recent Eurobike show they unveiled the BioLogic FreeCharge which will allow the user to keep their USB powered gadget charged while on the go.

The BioLogic FreeCharge is a small silicone-encased box and it features a high-capacity battery that will keep your gadget charged through your pedaling. The box can be mounted on the handlebar stem and has a USB port that you can use to attach your favourite USB powered workout partner.

It was estimated that it will take about three hours of pedaling to fully charge an iPhone. Of course, most people will not really use this to charge their device, instead it will more than likely just serve to keep your gadget’s battery from hitting zero.

As of now, the BioLogic FreeCharge is expected to be available in March of 2010 and will sell for around $100.
