Video: The dangers of texting while driving (Warning: Graphic)

If you know anyone who texts while driving, send them this PSA video from the UK. As a word of warning, this 4-minute clip is chilling to say the least, but I’m in favour of this graphic imagery if it stops people from texting while behind the wheel.

texting-while-driving1Warning: Before you click to watch this video, it is NOT for children. It is a graphic video that shows what could happen to those not paying attention on the road. There are young teenagers dying, blood splatter, kids crying for their parents to wake up, and so forth.

Do you think this video is too much? Or do you think it could drive home the point about the dangers of texting while driving?

Tell us your thoughts after watching it.

Honestly, I do not think that this was graphic enough. I think a body flying out of the car and being run over may be more realistic. Loss of limbs… It was a bit too clean in terms of what the aftermath of a crash site looks like. A little bit of blood is not going to scare a person, neither is the non-responsiveness of most of the characters. There could have been more impact with help not arriving quickly, witnesses not knowing what to do, etc.

It doesn’t matter how gruesome you make it, teens and some adults alike will not pay much attention to this. A friend of mine wrote off MY car because of texting their boyfriend. She was unhurt however the family she collided with weren’t so lucky. No one died however some of the injuries were fairly severe.

A commercial isn’t going to fix the problem. Heavy fines for people caught talking or texting on the roads and actually enforcing it is a real deterent. Also people have to start reporting this when they see it on the roads, and I don’t mean the people with the headsets. Treat it like a 12 hour suspension with a hefty fine and the insurance companies notified. Hit them where it hurts then maybe they can’t afford these ridiculous unlimited text and email plans.

I have had waaaaaay to many close calls with idiots on their phones not paying attention. I was actually rear ended a few months ago by some lady putting on makeup. It was a little difficult for her to lie about it when her masscara was smeared up the side of her face. I watched her for roughly 2km doing her makeup and talking on the phone.

My cell is always off in the car, if something is important enough to get ahold of me on the road then they can call my emergency line and my cell will power up and notify me there is a call waiting.

To all you people out there that think your cool because you can text 30wpm while driving. PUT THE DAMN PHONE AWAY!!! I love my family and want to get home to see them in one piece.

Having been rear-ended by a 20 year old girl who said she “was distracted for a minute” and who had her cell phone in her hand when the air bag was deflating, I know full well that she was texting when she embossed her license plate in the rear bumper of my vehicle. There were no signs that she had even attempted to brake, and she hit my vehicle hard enough to put me into the SUV ahead of me. BTW … myself and the SUV were both stopped for a red light, and were roughly half way between two traffic lights. My vehicle has been written off because the frame had been damaged too badly to even attempt to repair.

Frank I do agree with what your saying and I do not use my cell while driving however you are assuming things. First off no matter how fast someone is driving if you are fully stopped like you say you were and end up getting pushed into the vehicle in front of you its because you were too close to said vehicle. No amount of force can push you that far if you keep proper distance between you and vehicle in front of you while stoped. (Unless you blacked out from impact and foot came off brake) The vehicle in front of you has a right to sue you and the vehicle that hit you. You obviously can sue vehicle that hit you from behind. That all though would have to be proven in court. However if it were a semi or bus then possibly even if you leave proper distance you could be pushed into vehicle in front of you then you are not at fault in the least but agian things would have to be proven in court to speed and distance.

There is no way for you to know 100 percent if she was on her cell texting. You would need phone records to proove that. Yes it is a high possibilty she was texting or talking on cell but you can not assume anything.

Really? Are you an expert? Just how much distance do you keep between yourself and the next vehicle when you’re at a red light? Have you ever been rear-ended? The force of the impact is often enough that yes, your foot comes off the brake. Even if it didn’t, a 2,000 lbs car travelling at 40 or 50 km/h has more than enough inertia to push a stopped car. Talk about assuming things – I think you’ve just reinforced that one nicely.

I don’t think it was graphic enough. I drive for a living and have seen it first hand many times. There should have been more carnage to make it realistic. Bodys torn in half lieing on the road. decapatated body on the hood of a car and a head on the highway, a small child wide awake screaming at the top of its lungs becouse his or her lower limb severd of at the knees. The family dog licking the blood off the highway from a deceased person. ETC.Now that would hit home, becouse that is reality
as to what happens out there. Not this whimpy video I just saw.

I fail to see how dabbing a bit of fake blood onto the actors faces makes this video graphic.. Maybe i’m just desensitized to this kind of stuff, but i still agree with most of the people here that it could have been more realistic. I also agree that no amount of PSA videos is going to stop morons from texting on the damn road.

Wow, then I’m a lightweight because I found this video to be graphic! Of course it could be worse but I think it does a good job into scaring people who text n’ drive into thinking otherwise. You don’t believe it’s poewrful enough to sway those who do it?

The video no matter how graphic you find it, kids all think they are immortal. That would never happen to me, until it hits home when it is one of their close friends that dies in an accident. I have threatened my teens who are just getting their learners that if I ever catch them doing their makeup, talking on the phone etc while driving, that will be the end of their driving until they can afford to buy their own car and insurance, no second chances.

I do want to mention that even people who drive for a living are careless when it comes to these type of distractions. We passed a semi hauling gasoline the other day, he literally had a full size keyboard sitting on top of his steering wheel and he was typing away! His hands were not even on the steering wheel!!

Graphic, but how about real life horrors. Just ask Reggie Shaw, a 20-something who killed 2 men while texting and driving. The video is at ut.zerofatalities.com/ and asks “Can you live with taking a life because of texting?” My 26 yr old daughter had a 16 yr old girl as a customer; last weekend this girl was on her hand held cell talking to her boyfriend when she lost control and crashed. Her boyfriend heard her screams and the sounds of the crash that killed her. As if that wasn’t bad enough, my daughter happened to drive by while emergency crews were trying to extricate her lifeless body.

If you must talk on a cell while driving, invest in a Bluetooth–it’s cheaper than your life or mine. And there is NO reason in the world to take 1 hand and both eyes off the road to text while driving. I just may be in the car coming toward you.

Alright like none of you who have posted have ever texted or talked on the phone before while driving, seriously a bunch of hypocrites is what you all are. And yes the more violence the better the full view of bodies and things give up a good idea of “what could” ha[[en while you text and drive.
