Video: Review of Samsung’s über-thin BD-P4600 Blu-ray player
Not all Blu-ray players are created equal. After playing around with the incredibly slender Samsung BD-P4600, we offer up our thoughts on its pros and cons.
Here’s a quick look at Samsung’s latest (and greatest?) Blu-ray player in its arsenal.
On a related note, have you already jumped onboard the Blu-ray bandwagon or are you holding out until prices drop? Or do you think the future is in digital downloads?

Okay well the Ps3 has one of the WORST blu-ray players available.. your picture will be much clearer on a stand alone blu-ray disc player, if you a re talking value… yes a ps3 is better… For picture … ps3 is lacking hardcore..as far as blu- ray performance. and does not have true HD dts… perhaps you should learn what you are talking about before you spout your mouth .

As I actually have both, I can honestly say that the Bravia Blu-Ray player, which is one of the best, is the exact same as the PS3 in quality. I think you are misinformed because if you take apart the PS3 you will notice that the blu-ray drive in the PS3 matches the drive in the Bravia model. THe Bravia model only has the zoom unlocked in the firmware…. thats about the only difference. The PS3 is amazing for upscaleing and for 1080P and I will never recommend a standalone unless you want the extra features. but quality of picture, there is no difference. and the PS3 supports full HD sound as well. Love it when I bring it to my friends house. BTW when you goto the DTS Site I belive they even have an ad demonstrating the fact that the PS3 has full and complete DTS quality. PS3 FTW!

You are a douche bag.
If your PS3 is not giving you PERFECT Blu-ray or Digital HD
output then you are doing something wrong.
I have many Blu-ray discs and ‘USB’ transported movies wich are BD and I couldn’t be happier.
Perhaps you do not have an HD cable or someone has been altering your settings/input/output.
Sincerely,
SHARP 46″ LCD

I agree with Jonathan. The PS3 and Samsung players offer the exact 1080p video quality, but the PS3 has integrated Wi-Fi (the Samsung requires a small dongle to be attached). When it comes to audio, the Samsung supports more codecs, yes, but assuming you’re connecting the PS3 to an AV receiver with these decoders, it nullifies the advantage Samsung has. So in the end, it’s the svelte size is what the $100 is what you’re paying for.

Hello,
I would add my 2 cents to this discussion and you can see (if you check my website) that my company, Command Performance, has won the top ranking Home Theatre award at CEDIA 2004 (the Custom Electronics, Designers and Installers Association). We know a little about video purity.
Over the past number of years, we have installed the OPPO Players as standard because of the Sage video chips. We also install the Sony PS3 as well for its performance and convenience.
Here is the fact about the Sony PS3 – my good friend, Joe Kane, who has been the leading authority on picture quality reproduction for many years was asked this question – What is the best Blu-ray player?
Joe’s response was very direct – PS3
This is the only player he will use (even to show off his combined development Video Projector with Samsung). If you are in the market for the finest projector, look at Samsung. You will not be disappointed.
Since we are a company that prides ourselves with the final result not only of the convenience and sonic quality, but foremost with the video, it is our job to direct our clients to the best balance for their dollars.
The thing to ensure, however, is since the eyes do not lie, the video has to be excellent.
I must say that the Samsung Blu-ray is compelling as it is the first “real” player that you can wall mount – perfect for a wall mount flat panel TV.
Just my 2 cents from someone in this business since 1983.
Thx

the PS3 is better at playing blu ray since the PS3 is a 12 bit processor compared to a standalone blu ray player which uis about 8 to 10 bit.the higher processor makes the PS3 a better blu ray player.

PS3 and BluRay:
There is a lot of misconception out there. Someone talked about the PS3 and the Bravia having the same drive thus the quality should be the same. No, the drive only reads the data. The video processing is what is important.
The bottom line with the PS3 is that it is essentially a computer. The processing is software based and thus can be tweaked to perfection.
The main drawback with the PS3 is power consumption which, at about 81Watts for a BluRay movie is roughly 4x that of standalone players.
Considering the price of the PS3 Slim at $300, quality, tweaking via firmware updates and the other benefits of the console it’s hard to recommend another player until similarly performing BD/DVD standalone players drop below $200.
