I'm 28, not a parent yet but from my experience I can tell you this.

People under 21 don't have the decision making abilities that you acquire when you are grown. Majority of them cave in to peer pressures and alot of them do dangerous things that seem not so dangerous at that age. I grew up in Regent Park back in the 80's when it was a very violent area. I used to walk around there like there was nothing to fear because it was all I knew. One day my brother and I walking home from school were attacked by a homeless man I was about 10 at the time. Fortunately there was a young Italian man whom we used to buy hot dogs from nearby who scared him away. There are alot of unexpected things that happen in this world. If a phone will be a tool in helping ensure your kids are safe then if you can afford it by all means.

Any parent that has enough time to watch your every move on a phone has no life themselves. So infact its not only those of you with over protective parents that lose their freedom, the parents whom are doing this do too.

There were a few times where it would have been useful to call my dad and say "Dad, I don't know where I am but can you come pick me up?" because sometimes you find yourself in a spot. I walked alot of places when I was younger sometimes 4 hours in one direction. Atleast I would have felt a little safer if I needed help I didn't need to go find the nearest street sign to tell them where I was.

Another thing I would like to mention, is the potential for the opposite effect of this device toward the parents. But because I want to be responsible I won't give anyone any ideas.

This device can be used for multiple reasons, not just "stalking" your children. Obviously when someone puts a spin on this in that light most people will be turned off on the idea.

I'll keep my opinion brief. Tracking someone with GPS should remain in the access and control of law enforcement agencies. I know where I live, it's a legal requirement that cell phone providers track your phone, in-case of the event of an emergency.

One example found in a manual for one particular company's procedures, in the event of a suicide threat is called in, the telecommunications provider (both land-line/home and wireless/cell) must forward the whereabouts of the cell user who made the call to the authorities, and retain a recording of the call which is reviewed in-case the person who answered the call may have provided encouragement at any point.

So, a few questions here:

What is a "tween"?
Why do you insist on saying everything is a 'burn'?
Why do you keep repeating yourself?

Fair that you would be mad at being tracked, but if you're out in the city at age 12 alone, it's best your parents know where you are.
Simply put, it's not as safe as it may've been.

All your parents are doing is knowing WHERE you are. They're not (atleast, not with Latitude) listening to your conversatios, or intruding upon your personal life. How does this make you miserable?

As I read all these comments many have gone off topic. The issue here is not of trust or being into every aspect of your childs life. It's about whether Google Latitude should be used to track children. It's a parents job to ensure the safety of their children no matter "HOW OLD!!" This Google Latitude can be useful in many ways. I also agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Opinions though, are like @ssholes everyone has one, it's all in the way you present yourself. There's alot more dangers on our street these days than in the past. Us as parents are not trying to be intrusive, we're trying to be protective of the ones we love. Kids of all ages just stop a minute and look at it from our point of view. "We do care"

that was probably one of the stupidest comments thats been written.

1. I'm part of "this generation", and I have NEVER had sex, done drugs, or been involved in violence. And the opportunities have come up. Not very often.. but still.

2. The reason I've never done any of these things is BECAUSE I know my parents trust me, and I would dissapppoint them, but mostly because I know I would disappoint my self.

3. Even if teenagers DID have this technology being used on them, it doesn't tell the parents WHAT they are doing. They could be doing drugs and having sex in their own bedroom, and having fights in the bathroom before school starts, and the parents wouldn't know it.

4. People who cut themselves SHOULD NOT be made fun of. It is something people who suffer from DEPRESSION do, and depression is an ILLNESS. Would you make fun of a person who is bald because they've received treatment for cancer? Sure there are the idiots who think cutting is cool, but that's different.

5. Just don't bother to post anymore if your going to be this idiotic

Our generation is fueled by violence, drugs and rage! If our parents don't stalk us and stop us who will! We can't expect our parents to trust us when we can't even trust ourselves! I shall go back to my emo room now and start cutting myself. Good night!
