Confirmed: Twitter followers bought for Michael Jackson
You might not be aware there are paid services that adds followers to your Twitter account. Web promotions company uSocial.net today confirmed the rumours are true: they’re still processing an order for one of the biggest names in entertainment: the late King of Pop.
Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are powerful marketing platforms — and that’s no exception for artists looking to better connect with their fans (and of course, sell more music, concert tickets and merchandise).
But a controversial paid Twitter follower service, offered by uSocial.net, is fulfilling an order to add 25,000 followers to one Twitter account you’d think doesn’t need the help: Michael Jackson.
The followers were purchased before the pop star died last month.
“I can’t admit that we dealt with Michael Jackson directly, though we were in touch with someone in his family recently who tasked us with conducting a Twitter campaign on an account relating to him” said Leon Hill, CEO of uSocial.net, in a company statement published today. “It was exciting to say the very least to conduct work with such a big name.”
“For obvious reasons we’ll be dealing with his family from here on in, though it would have been great to conduct services for Michael Jackson in a different time, under different circumstances” adds Hill.
uSocial.net confirms it ignored a Cease & Desist notice from Digg.com’s lawyers over its paid social bookmarking service last December.
Do you think it’s ethical to “buy” followers to your Twitter account, as it gives the impression you’re more popular than you really are? Or do you believe it’s a perfectly legit practice and you’re fine with it? Who’s bad? (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
