Want more than 500,000 free electronic books?

By No Comments

If you own — or thought about picking up — one of those electronic book readers from Sony, today’s announcement might be of interest for you — and your wallet.

sony-ebook-reader1Sony and Google today announced it is providing Canadians with access to more than a half-million free electronic books (eBooks) from the public domain, all downloadable via Sony’s eBook Store.

These titles — which span hundreds of genres — were digitized by Google (as part of its Google Books project) and available in EPUB format, which can be read on a PC or better yet, copied over to Sony Reader Digital Books (except for the PRS-500).

To get your public domain books, follow these easy steps:

1. Download the eBook library software (required) here.

2. Register an account. Launch the eBook Library software on your PC and click on Register at the top. Follow the instructions to Create an Account. (If you’re already a registered user, just Sign In.)

3. Search for a Book. Enter your search term, and click “Search Books.”

4. Read on the PC or transfer to your reader. On the detail page for the title, click on “Download.” Connect your Reader and transfer the book from the Library directory.

Examples of top eBooks from the public domain includes Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ulysses by James Joyce, The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci — Complete by Leonardo da Vinci, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas père.
