No, you won’t get a free netbook — and stop sending me these emails

It blows me away how gullible people are. This week I’ve been getting emails from friends who tell me if I pass on the message to 10 people I’ll get a free netbook from Sony Ericsson. Sigh. People, wake up and smell the hoax.

Sony Ericsson Hoax It blows me away how gullible people are. This week I've been getting emails from friends who tell me if I pass on the message to 20 or more people I'll get a free netbook from Sony Ericsson. Sigh. People, wake up and smell the hoax.

In case you haven't received this one already, there's a new email around that says for you to forward the message around to friends and you'll get a Sony Ericsson netbook.

I remember years ago there was a similar one about Bill Gates sending you a cheque for $300 if you'd forward the email, as Microsoft was testing out a new messaging system.

How naive are you guys to think you'd actually get a free computer by simply forwarding a message?

C'mon now, this is clearly a hoax.

But in case you need to hear it from the horse's mouth, Sony Ericsson has just issued this notice:

Sony Ericsson has been made aware of an online email campaign claiming that Ericsson will give away a free laptop computer to users who forward the promotional information. The same campaign includes a photograph of the Sony Ericsson logo and mentions an Ericsson contact name and email number.

Sony Ericsson confirms that this email campaign is a hoax. In addition, Sony Ericsson confirms that the Ericsson contact name does not exist.

All competitions and promotions involving Sony Ericsson are run through official channels such as Sony Ericsson’s website or Sony Ericsson’s partners’ websites. Please be wary of any competition or promotion that appears to come from outside of Sony Ericsson or Sony Ericsson’s partners official channels. Examples of these include via spam emails or SMS.

Please do not reply to or forward the email if you receive it.

Well said. My frustration with hoax e-mails is coming to a point too.
As someone starting out in the IT field, I'm frequently asked "is this e-mail a hoax?" and not even 9, but 10 times out of 10 the answer is "yes". If the e-mail seems strange enough to elicit the question, then chances are it is.
While end users may deem it appropriate to contact the company included in the e-mail, it may be better to leave that to people who are more experienced in dealing with these e-mails so that companies aren't swarmed with communication regarding something they have nothing to do with which creates its own set of issues.
