Perhaps you've run across an iPhone software developer who creates some of the 50,000+ applications ("apps") available for the popular smartphone. To download these Apple-approved apps, it's as easy as visiting the App Store (part of iTunes) on a PC or iPhone and clicking "Get App."
But let's say a developer want you to test-drive their software while it's still in beta — and not yet published to Apple's virtual store for digital distribution.
For this you'll need to know your iPhone or iPod touch's UDID (Unique Device Identifier, a sequence of 40 letters and numbers that is specific to your device.
It might look something like this: 3bvf0cd905d173b22f1740235f5674904n841286.
So, how do you find your device's UDID, you ask?
Simply plug the iPhone (or iPod touch) into your computer and wait until iTunes boots up. Now, select your phone from the Devices list on the left-hand side and click the "Summary" tab. To se your UDID, just click on the word "Serial number" (beside the picture of the iPhone or iPod touch) and you will see the word "Identifer" and a 40-digit alphanumeric string. This is your UDID.
And no, you won't need to manually write this down to give to the developer. Instead, press Control + C to copy (or on a Mac, Command + C) and paste it into an email or document.
