Report: 3-D movies in homes the Next Big Thing?

So you bought a Hannah Montana DVD for your daughter, cousin or niece, and it came with 3-D glasses. Get used to it. According to London-based Futuresource Consulting, 3-D movies and other media is growing. Rapidly.
A new report has found 10 percent of U.S. and Japanese households, and about 6 percent of homes in Western Europe, will be 3-D enabled by 2012.
Rather than 3-D flicks that ship with glasses, as is the trend today with many kids movies, this report suggests TV manufacturers will soon be delivering 3-D-ready sets and glasses – though without one universally-embraced format just yet – followed by more 3-D video-on-demand (VOD) and video gaming content.
The trend is already happening with theatrical releases and its DVD/Blu-ray version, as seven films were released in 3-D in 2008. More than double that is planned for 2009, with 17 titles, such as the hit Monsters vs. Aliens animated comedy from DreamWorks Animation.
Futuresource Consulting says classic Hollywood blockbusters will also get the 3-D treatment as the technology catches on, including remasters of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and The Matrix films.
Non-movie 3-D content will also take off, including concerts, sports programming, wildlife documentaries and while it’ll be slow to start, some television shows, too.
The second stage of the 3-D rollout will encompass “autostereoscopic” displays, where no special optical glasses will be required.
What are your thoughts on this? Is it a gimmick or do you think 3-D really adds a lot to the movie? Do you prefer it in the theatres or do you think it will take off more in the home? And would you buy a 3-D-ready TV?

Anyone know where you can buy one or two pairs of 3-D glasses? None of the usual movie rental places had any,
and a web search only came up with sources that sell in bulk. I don't need a box with 100 glasses…
Hey Ron,
I'd try Craigslist.ca or Kijiji.ca
Marc
I think 3D will be in demand as fast as it canbe developed. Sooon people will HAVE to update their tv's. May as well spend a bit more and get the real thing.
3D will soon be the rage. Based on what I have seen at the Consumer Electronic Show in Vegas last January, even 3D glasses are already on the way out. LG presented a 3D LCD TV that can be viewed without the funky glasses and the effect is totally awesome.
Well i own an r.c.a 61" projection tv at home and also have a blu ray player hooked up to it. Recently i bought My bloody valentine 3d on blu ray and although it was alot better then previous dvd releases, i still found it hard to watch and they have way far to go with this source of visual. So i think i would purchase a 3d ready tv for sure! the kids and i love going to the theatre for the 3d releases we all find it way cool, most recently we took in Monsters vs aliens and it was awesome.
The only issue I found with 3D movies using glasses is that you have to keep your head straight , you cannot lie down, leen etc… If you do the picture is not good in fact you cannot watch the movie. I hope they have address this issue with the new 3D TV's comming out.
I'm color deficient (aka not quite full-on color blind but close enough) and most 3D glasses do NOT work at all for me…so, yay?
Until all the channels are HD, what is the point in watching 3D especially with glasses.
I LOVE 3D movies, and I cant wait for more to come out, and oh ya… I would buy a 3D enabled tv… love it!
3-D is awesome and will be a big hit. If equal to the level seen at Disney World etc. Especially technology that does not require glasses.
Sports will be outstanding as well as Wild Life and Travel shows.
I am sure Adult films will also be a hit with a lot of people.
cool
do u now when tv r going to come out like that
I will not be getting a 3D TV, what is the point of it, just another gimmick to waste money on. The HD is fine and I see no reason to change
This technologi is sooooo cheap and cheesy, no wonder kids and backward countries go into it, they don't know better.
Don't you get a headache with those crappy cardboard glasses with acetates?? I do.
i like the direction :)(if it can advance holographic technology… that i'd buy) the glasses do hurt my eyes, which is why i'd like to see it on a TV where you don't need the glasses.
some movies try to put the depth in(look for it closely, you'll see it) without putting in the 3-d effect, so i think that it'll be nice for film. :) it would change the landscape for film enough that we might get something interesting. oh yes, and gamers would love this too ;) (though i'm sure there are lots of applications where this would be really great)
still, we'd only know if people bought it, and that's too much change between being forced through to HD and then the options… LCD, PLASMA, OLED, LED, PROJECTOR, :D and the old tube…. the options are FAR too vast for the average or ill-educated consumer, and beyond the pricepoint for others. it also doesn't serve many people. if they just watch TV, again, it's completely useless.
Plus i think having the glasses in your house might just be a little too cheesy for me. maybe great for a home theatre, where you'd get the whole experience, but to watch on a regular tv is a waste of time.
With all this said, i hope it's atleast given a 10 market year run, to see how it advances technology
umm… that was a no, i wouldn't buy, but i'd love to see the technology :)
3D TV? I guess it will be funny to watch Jerry Springer fighting his guests in 3D… wait… no, not even in 3D. May be the shopping channel? Nah, come on, not all TV needs to be 3D, specially when it is not the projector but the content what sucks.
I'm 15, and this is probably aimed mostly at my age group, but I see it as foolish and as a money scam. They tried this 3D thing a few years back with Spy Kids and other movies, didn't work then, won't work now.
OMG THOSE GLASSES MAKES FACES LOOK SILLY
Only a TV with 3D-ness, without the need for glasses, who the heck would want to wear glasses every time they watch TV? Especially people who already wear glasses, and would need to wear glasses over glasses? No thanks.
