Panda Security, makers of Internet security products including antivirus tools, has just unveiled a project three years in the making: Panda Cloud Antivirus for Windows XP and Windows Vista (and soon Windows 7) is online-based security software, currently in beta, designed to protect your PC for free.
Panda says its Panda Cloud Antivirus detects viruses and other kinds of malware by aggregating threats seen by its users in real time. The company calls this "Collective Intelligence," and to date has worked effectively by processing (and then protecting users from) tens of thousands of threats each day.
While technically working "in the cloud," the software takes up about 50MB of hard drive space and uses roughly 17MB of RAM when in use.
So, what happens when you're offline and plug in a virus-infested USB drive? A local, cached copy of the antivirus protection should protect users in such a scenario.
