It’s official: No PS3 price drop, says Sony
Sorry, gamers. Don’t believe the hype about a PlayStation 3 price drop, says Sony Computer Entertainment Canada, as there is no truth to these swirling rumours.
Sorry, gamers. Don't believe the hype about a PlayStation 3 price drop, says Sony Computer Entertainment Canada, as there is no truth to these swirling rumours.
You might have heard about the new price drop for the 9 year-old PlayStation 2 (now $109.99), but despite all the buzz in Internet forums, don't expect a reduced sticker on the PlayStation 3 ($399.99).
Many articles and blog posts have been written about the gaming community rallying together to push Sony to drop the price of its current video game console — the most expensive gaming system out of the bunch (Xbox 360 starts at $199.99 and Nintendo Wii is $279.99) — but there are no plans to do so, says Kyle Moffatt of Sony Computer Entertainment Canada.
As we have stated previously, we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumours to that effect are false and are the result of speculation. SCEA remains focused on the long-term momentum of PS3. With the industry's best software lineup this year, combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date, we remain confident in our approach and the value we're delivering with PS3.
Too bad. Oh sure, we know there's a Blu-ray player in there, but times are tough. And think about all the gamers they're losing to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii because of their more affordable price tag.
What are your thoughts on this? Sony already lowered the price of the PS3 twice (it originally debuted in Canada at $659), so isn't that enough? Do the PS3 exclusives and media features justify the price tag?

I'm okay with the $399 Price tag… it's just the games and the Blu Ray movies I want to see a price drop!!
Ok, I've given up…
I'm going to buy a stand-alone Blue Ray player (not Sony)and continue to buy games for my Xbox 360. The people have spoken again and again and Sony refuses to listen. So goodbye PS3, and don't bother dropping the price on my behalf. I won't be back for a while.
Maybe by the time the PS4 rolls out they will get themselves together and hopefully someone will remember the PS2 fondly enough to generate some interest. But boy Sony, you dropped the ball on this one. What a shame.
Ron, with all due respect, your argument is a joke. You are going to buy a stand alone (not Sony) because Sony won't drop the price. I own a PS3 and I can tell you I haven't regretted buying it at all. It's the best Blu Ray player on the market, and the games are great. Why should they drop the price? Sony outclasses the Xbox and the Wii. Beef up the Wii to 720p graphics and toss in a blu ray player and guess what it's going to cost. Same goes for the Xbox. I'm sick of these people who whine about paying for the best. Stick with your Xbox and shut up already.
the xbox 360 is better, ssony is terrible. Why doesnt everyone see this, 360 is better, has better games and is cheaper. It has better hardware and it has better graphics. It came out a year before Ps3 and Ps3 could not prove to be better, It had a year to capitalize on the 360 but didnt! It actually failed. 360 is way up on sales…. theres proof. Check your facts buddy.
Brian.
At the risk of a flame war, you need to take stock of your rebutal. Fine that you have made a decision to pay for the PS3 but most of us who can count have looked at this purchase and the cost does not justify the return.
You may argue that the technology is state of the art and a deal, even at this price but the reality is technology for the sake of technology is futile. It does not provide a better gaming experience than the competition and has less titles to boast. These are some of the reasons myself and countless others have sat on the sideline while the WII and 360 move ahead and the ps3 stagnates on store shelves.
My argument is that I already have a game console but need a Blue Ray. I would be willing to pay the extra $100 on top of the cost of a player, thus potentially drawing me into a cycle of purchases and brand loyalty (i.e: profit for Sony).
We all know Sony loses money on hardware but they make it back on media purchases. So before you tell me (or anyone) to "shut up", please consider that more people than myself understand business, competition and marketing hype and know than Sony is making a mistake here. I only hope it's not too late for Sony (but apparently too late for you)
K, all im saying is that i have all 3 systems, and by far the one i play like a fien is of course the PS3!
i own over 250 blurays, and on my 65' Plasma games and movies look incredible..
when i play my xbox 360 i can see the difference even with the HD player..
for $400 the PS3 is by far the best on the market.
Even with xbox paying for XBOX LIVE, when PS3 Network is amazing. and oh yea….FREE!!!!!
PS3 RULES!!!
thanks for reading..lol
yo man i thought ps3 was like 356$ but if its 399.99 (400$) i unno if i shoul buy it any more
Ron,
Due to the fact that Xbox 360 came out a year earlier than the PS3 the older games are cheaper. All of the new games coming out for both the 360 and PS3 are the same price,$70. About the gaming experience the PS3 is better because a few things. One, The Controller. The Dualshock 2 for the PS2 was amazing and they recreated that feeling with the Dualshock 3 except its wireless. Two, the Xbox controller is awkward to use and the rumble is nowhere near as good as the Dualshock. The Graphics are better. An 80gb is 399 and the Xbox 60gb is 299 but PS3 has a blu-ray.
Get your facts straight SABIN… The PS3 Controller is NOT better. The sixaxis is next to useless, the RUMBLE is NON-EXISTENT on most titles and the form fitting shape of the 360 wins hands ON. The thumbstick repositioning is a great move. The D-pads on PS3 are nicer but the thumbsticks are much better tighter and more responsive on the 360.
GRAFX are better on the 360 on multi-console games seen it on my TV so I know. Read professional reviews on the topic you will understand.
For gaming the 360 is better. The 50$ XBL is great especially now with their new projects coming along it’s amazing. Games are much more reliable on the 360 online. The PS3 has great exclusives though and the reason I own one.
If you think I’m not right. Think again of 1 I own a SONY 1080p and My Gamerscore is 30K on the 360 and I’m a Level 10 with 6 Platinums on PS3 exclusives. Which just makes me right by default.
Thanks for your acknowledgment
You guys are all gay.. find something more productive to do than argue about a gaming system. Homo’s!
No Doubt. In one year a better system with bigger cayones (spanish) will arrive and all that stuff will get melted down into plastic recycled stuff.
Ps3 sucks I AM going to buy a 360 pro way cheaper I’d buy ps3 only if it was $200
