I have found turnitin.com to be worse than useless. Can I evaluate your program on a short trial basis on my Mac OS X?

"O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;"

Jonie, you're just about there, almost. "Wherefore" is actually old english for "why". But it is not "where" which refers more on the location. So yeah, she was asking "why" and not "where".

sorry, I just can't help to notice the two of you. My school's actually using a different anti-plagiarism software for several years now, I just think it is a waste of their (the faculty's) time since term papers, essays, etc, are being checked by teachers prior to undergoing software reassessment. In fact, I don't see the point of the program anymore, let alone this new Plagiarism-Detector 0.8

Dear Ashley,

I did put "references" of links at the end of my essay. My english teacher overlooked it. And about that "typo"... why don't you try and search for the script of Romeo and Juliet on the internet and skip to the part where Juliet is by the window reminiscing about Romeo. God, I can't wait to see your face go crimson when you fid out it is indeed "WHY" coz she was asking why Romeo had to be Romeo; a Montague, a bitter rival of her family, Jesus. You act like you're so smart. Go search it and get back to me. But you made a total ass of yourself infront of all these people so no further comments.

LOL! "where art thou romeo?" ? you're funny.

this is nothing new for students. highschool teachers all over have been using turnitin.com. it compares your work with everybody else that use the stuff along with stuff on the internet. throughout highschool for every class you have, if you didn't put your stuff thru the website it was an automatic zero. from what I hear universities and colleges also use it. Many people have gotten caught cheating from someone in a different school. My mom's friend used her daughter's paper because they are both in a nursing program but the mom's is in new brunswick and the daughter's is in the states, the mom still got caught.I know it is free for the students to make an account but I don't know if teachers or schools have to pay for it. if they don't then this seems to be a waste of time for skyline because there would be an established free program already out there.

Plagerism programs can only go so far and we must still rely on the teacher's ability to asses the situation. There are just times you come up with the same ideas- either as other students (I mean, we all are at the same level with a similar background in the material) or even researchers.

Besides, they say everyone is accused of plagerism once in their academic career though not all are guilty (or so was the speech I received in my freshman year). I was: after writing an amazing paper (I thought) and turning it in, I was telling my best friend over lunch about all the stuff I learned on my topic, including a most perfect explanation of a concept. She looked at me and said "oh, you're a [someone] fan." When I said I had never heard of him, she said that was his exact explanation. A string of curse words came out of my mouth, followed by my (literal) dragging of my friend to my professor's office. I interupted a phone call (oops) but telling him what had happened immediately saved my ass. Actually, he offered me an extra 5% if I go find this reference and add it to my paper.

So maybe your paper isn't exactly original, even if you write it yourself. However, doing the work is how you learn to think like the greats and grow into the profession. Without knowing about his work (though I am sure it was easier much later with the information we know have today), I came up with the same idea as an expert researcher. If you were honest all along, you can take comfort in the idea that an accusation of plagerism means you are on the right path.

Universities already use this and have for years. It is a requirement for many classes that your paper "pass" the plagiarism test to a certain percent before you may hand it in to the professor. The program is at http://turnitin.com and it highlights all of the problem areas, as well as giving you options to "not check" sections like bibliographies and direct quotes (that will be verbatim but not plagiarism if cited properly!)
It also keeps a database across universities of all the papers that have been turned in before, so you cannot re-use papers or re-sell them to another student online.

Seems like a good idea. Only problem is that it is not unusual for people to have the same ideas and perhaps not verbatim to what had been previously said but if someone says something close enough to that they are likely to peg an innocent person as a cheater. Or worse, a fraud. On top of that, the manpower you would need to make the determination is a bit of a waste on something that is not all that important and no benefit for our society in general. Never mind the legal aspects this will surely bring. Accusing someone of any type of fraud means in reality, the lawyers are the only ones that will find any gain in this "solution". Just my opinion, and god knows i could have gone on :)

Frankly I am against the majority of plagarism programs. Unless they are used to find whole paragraphs or multiple sentences in a row, I find that they are misleading.

This is because I before have been accused of plagarising when it had been my authentic work. For some subjects or articles, there are only so many ways you can write or exress the answer. So when a teacher compares your answers with your classmates answers, chances are there will be many extremely similar if not exact phrases.
