Freezing fingers, be gone! Here’s an innovative way to keep your extremities from getting cold – as long as you plan on not doing much with your hands.
Freezing fingers, be gone! Here’s an innovative way to keep your extremities from getting cold – as long as you plan on not doing much with your hands.
Imagine this: You’re sitting at your computer or video game console and your hands are cold as ice. All you can think about is that your fingers are freezing. What if you had gloves that heated themselves to the perfect temperature to keep you nice and toasty? Guess what? They really do exist.
Available online at a number of retailers for around $25 U.S., this unusual pair of gloves heats up by plugging into any USB port. They’re available in girly pink or boring grey wool and feature an optional flap that buttons back to either expose your fingerless gloves or keep them covered up as full mittens. The two heat settings on each glove may be set individually to your temperature preference of either lukewarm or nice-and-toasty.
Although they take about five minutes to heat up, the gloves do work as promised. However, the pads in the gloves (which are similar to a standard heating pad) are only embedded on the backs as opposed to on the palms, so if you aren’t wearing the optional flap, your fingers miss out on the heating action. But, if you decide to use the flap then your fingers are covered and you lose the ability to type or hold a video game controller properly. A bit of a Catch-22! Unless you are only planning on using your mouse or do something that doesn’t involve your fingers, this could be problematic for being functional while still being warm.
These gloves are a great idea as long as you’re not planning to use them for the Iditarod, an impromptu hockey game or moving more than three feet away from the USB port on one of your electronics. However, if you need a jolt of heat to get blood flowing back through your hands, these get my recommendation as a quick fix to freezing fingers.
