Wow, talk about a country with some swollen thumbs. Nintendo’s new DSi portable game player has sold more than a half-million units in Japan within the first month of its release.
The redesigned gaming machine, which retails for the equivalent of about $179, outshines its predecessor, the Nintendo DS, Canada’s best-selling gaming machine, in several ways: It offers a much thinner body; two larger and brighter LCD screens; two cameras (one on the front, one on the back); better-quality speakers; enhanced online connectivity; and the ability to listen to digital music stored on removable SDHC cards.
To date, the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite and the month-old Nintendo DSi have sold nearly 25 million units in Japan alone, just under a third of the 84.3 million units sold worldwide.
Industry pundits believe the Nintendo DSi will be available in Canada and the U.S. by mid-2009.
