Wanted: Free image batch converter

No problem, Diane. You came to the right place.

While you probably haven’t heard of it, XnView is a fast and free graphics program with a converter that can handle group tasks, such as converting 50 BMP images into JPGs for you. It can also do batch renaming, so you won’t have to manually name each file such as image – 1.tif, image – 2.tif, and so on.

XnView can read more than 400 file formats — including uncompressed RAW and video files, too, such as QuickTime, AVI and MPEG.

While the interface is basic, resembling Windows Explorer’s files and folders, it offers the batch work as well as some editing support like red-eye correction. It can also turn your photos into a slideshow with transition effects.

Yes, she expects too much, but this is an interesting response. Good for 'after-editing' work on batches of images, I would think, or crappy shots from cell-phones. Too bad it's not for MAC's, but the users of the best computer usually have Photoshop anyway.
    :-)

On the subject of conversion, I am looking for a utility (preferably free!) that will allow me to strip the video portion off an AVI or WMV file and leave only a usable sound file, WAV or whatever.

I have a funny feeling Macromedia Flash 8 might somehow allow this but if so, I haven't figured out how to do it. I have that, Roxio Creative Studio 10, and QuickTime Pro and none of them seem to do the trick.

To "bet" : Remember that the author of the letter asked about FREE programs. The Cucusoft program you are promoting is not free, and the information page has some difficulties in translation from the original language to English, which leaves me wondering if the user manaual would have some problems as well.

While it's not a format converter, if you simly want to convert images to another size (such as highres camera photos to smaller useable/shareable online formats – i.e. 800×600 or 1024×768 etc.) you want a tiny, free, program called PhotoResize.

    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pictureresizer.html

Simply drag and drop your photos onto the desktop icon and it creates new copied & resized images renamed with whatever size you've named the icon. EG: PhotoResize800 would give you 800×600 images, PhotoResize1280 would give you 1280×1024 images. The files are renamed with -800 or -1280 appended to the original name depending on what size you renamed the icon to.

Nothing to install, nothing to learn, just one simple desktop icon to drag one or multiple images onto before emailing them or adding them to an online gallery. I have dozens of clients who use this simple free program to make maintaining their gallery websites painless and quick.

The BEST FREE pic editor is Irfanview, found at most download sites. This prog does most everything, including batch conversion, and does it well!

For Eric, I found this program to be very useful. http://www.formatoz.com/ Format Factory, I think it's quite easy to use and there are many output options and a lot of preset settings too, plus it's free.
