XnviewDiane R. from Kanata, Ont. asks "Marc, I don't know if something like this exists, but I'm looking for a photo program that can do batch conversion and batch renaming -- but it has to be free. Am I asking too much?"

No problem, Diane. You came to the right place.

While you probably haven't heard of it, XnView is a fast and free graphics program with a converter that can handle group tasks, such as converting 50 BMP images into JPGs for you. It can also do batch renaming, so you won't have to manually name each file such as image - 1.tif, image - 2.tif, and so on.

XnView can read more than 400 file formats -- including uncompressed RAW and video files, too, such as QuickTime, AVI and MPEG.

While the interface is basic, resembling Windows Explorer's files and folders, it offers the batch work as well as some editing support like red-eye correction. It can also turn your photos into a slideshow with transition effects.
