Okay, so there's a lot of tension when it comes to video game preferences. Especially amongst the younger generation who can only afford ONE system at the current prices, not to mention to cost of new games, so you have to be fanatical about your purchase, if only to convince yourself that you made the right decision.

Now hold on a second, don't get me wrong, I own every major system (I don't own a TG-16, nor any of those funky 'controller plugs into your TV' hacks) since the Atari 2600 and a wall of games... I consider myself a massive gamer, but you won't catch me preaching the virtues of one system over another. (Except the Sega Genesis... The one still holds a special place in my heart.)

At the end of the day, each system fits a different niche. I have my Xbox because of Knights of the Old Republic, my DS for downtime at work, my N64 because I wanted to play Zelda when it came out, my NES because Mario was cool, my Gamecube because I was sick of losing at Smash everytime I visited my brother, my PSX because Final Fantasy 7 rocked, my 360 because my boss got me addicted to Forza, my Genesis because Sonic beat Mario, my Wii because my other half wanted it, and because NiGHTS made a return engagement post-Sega Saturn, my Sega Saturn because of NiGHTS the first time around, my Master System because Alex Kidd had my name, my PS3 because of Heavenly Sword, my SNES because RPG's took over my high school years, and my PS2 because they also took over my college years, My Dreamcast because I loved the controller, and my 2600 for nostalgia.

I'm sure most people don't really care, but hey, that's the way I see it. Every system has a right to live, and they'll all eventually live with me. Each one has its good points, and each one has its flaws. The PS3, 360 and Wii are healthy competition. And people who love each will always argue. I remember pulling my sisters hair when I was a kid over Alex Kidd vs. Mario, and who was cooler.

To comment on the article? Nintendo King in Canada? Tell me about it... Getting a Wii was a chore in itself, three store visits before I found one that had it in stock. Low price and appeal to the broadest range of consumers possible, of course that'll sell more units.
Speaking of which, it's flashing a blue disc drive at me right now, there's an update to download I guess, I'm off.

the wii sucks. only reason it sold more is because its cheaper and reaches a broader audience of people who like crap games and think its cool. even my parents, and uncles thought wii was cool, but they would never buy a 360 or ps3. most young adults would get a real video gaming system. you dont hear people at school takling about wii sports or wii fit in class. you hear about gears of war, halo, metal gear, etc....

wii sucks compared to other systems for real video games and if you dont realize that then lol@u.

Nintendo is Kings because they innovate. While Sony and Microsoft just duplicate. Xbox is making Mii rip offs and Sony has been ripping Nintendo off since the days of the N64.

I love the expression 'Serious-Gamer'... How do you seriously jump and shoot by pressing button combinations? If you think the graphics of the Wii arent realistic enough then how do explain rapidly pressing A to stay alive?

Laura hit the nail on the head about comparing apples to oranges. It's not about price. If price were the big thing everyone would just buy a PS2. It's not about graphics or online play otherwise everyone would just play PC games. It's about mass appeal. With a bit of strategy and luck and timing, Nintendo nailed it with mass appeal. Fans of any system are not wrong, they're just people that prefer different things.

I consider the PS3 and Xbox to be evolutionary while the Wii is revolutionary. According to some of the people here that makes me an idiot because I like a certain game system. I have to admit I can't compare to the serious gamers. I have just about every cartridge and most disc based systems ever made going back to the Magnavox Odyssey. Every one of them has good and bad points. Everyone of them gets boring if that's all you play.

Comparing the Wii and the 360 and the PS is like comparing Apples and Oranges and Grapefruits. You are all wasting your time. No One person is right. Everyone has different opinions about each system and it all depends on you- how much you play- what you play-who you play with-where you play. Just quit arguing! We need many different systems. No one system is the best. I LOVE my Xbox 360 but I'd like a Wii. Its fun for a while- but video games are supposed to be kinda relaxing not exercise. LOL.
Also-to correct some people- Xbx did not stop making origional xbox games when the 360 came out. Halo 3 did not end the series.

I find it funny that there are so many people that are sore since the Wii passed the 360.

What people have to realize is that you need two systems to have a good variety. Wii for the party and PS3/360 for that quiet night of gaming. I love my PS3, but I keep on going back to my Wii when friends come over because it's what's best for a good time with friends.

Sony figured it out earlier this year and announced that it was no longer competing with Wii and started focusing on the hardcore gamers, letting Nintendo nab the "casual" gamers. Microsoft is up for one hell of a battle the way it's going, so expect the PS3 to catch the 360. Especially since Halo 3 ended the series.

Companies have forgotten about the real market out there. Families.

With the lack of good, cheap, family entertainment available on the market, Nintendo has caught on, and succeeded where the others have failed.

MS and Sony are catering to the AV and gamer geeks of the world, but those people are a small percentage of the market.

New technology and sky-rocketing prices have the best interest of bachelors and yuppies in mind, meanwhile forgetting the core of the retail market, the middle class family.

Nintendo has tapped into that market, and will continue to succeed as long as so many other technological manufacturers ignore it.

It is simple demographics. Aside from the target audience already mentioned by some people here (+50 and -14), I believe they also target certain people in between.

I am in my middle 20's and I do not consider myself a hardcore gamer. Although I have always enjoyed playing games, I have always been more of a Computer Games person than a console one (my last console was a Dreamcast). I played the Wii and the PS3 at a friend's place (another 25 something guy) and the Wii blew mi mind. A lot of us at this age range have a budget, a relationship and are trying to save for that first house or paying a mortgage already. The Wii has something for us, our wife/girlfriend, younger and older cousins, parents, brothers and sisters, etc... The Wii targets the largest possible portion of the population, and yes I do beleive it targets a lot of the 20-50 gamers. While the games in PS3 and XBOX definitely look better, they only target a minority of the population (hardcore gamers). They could almost be considered “speciality” consoles.

From my perspective, Wii is a definite winner!

My favorite system is still the GameCube - especially now that it "on the way out" to make way for the Wii. With series such as Legend Of Zelda, Metroid, and, of course, Mario... these are games which are timeless and with the now affordable prices my husband and I have been buying up whatever stock we can find at the back of EB Games, et al.
