HP announces multi-touch laptop

HP today announced the TouchSmart tx2 ($1,249), the first convertible notebook computer with multi-touch technology, designed specifically for consumers. Yep, much like how you can manipulate photos and scroll through album artwork with your fingers on an iPhone, a similar touch technology is coming soon to a laptop near you.
Leveraging its experience with the TouchSmart desktop PC product, HP’s upcoming convertible notebook will let users tap, swipe, drag and flick digital content using their fingertips on the 12.1-inch BrightView LED display.
Available in Canada this January, this "convertible" tx2 – meaning the screen swivels and folds down to turn from a laptop into a tablet and vice-versa (and includes a rechargeable pen) – can be used via a keyboard, mouse or hands, to work with info and media.
"Breezing through websites and enjoying photos or video at the tap, whisk or flick of a finger is an entirely new way to enjoy digital content on a notebook PC," said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager of HP’s notebook global business unit, personal systems group. "With the introduction of the TouchSmart tx2, HP is providing users an easier, more natural way to interact with their PCs, and furthering touch innovation."
Starting at under 4.5 pounds, the tx2 is powered by the AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core mobile processor (regular or ultra) and Windows Vista Home Premium, and with many other configurable specs including storage, system memory and integrated wireless radios.
HP’s TouchSmart tx2 Notebook PC will be available this January at Best Buy and Staples locations or online at hp.ca.

I don't think the keyboard is theatened just yet. I can (quietly) input data far quicker via keyboard than I can speaking. If I tried to dictate a memo on board a crowded flight, the other passengers would likely threaten violence.
Even so, touch (especially multi-touch) is still in its infancy. I always liked the tablet concept, and multi-touch makes it even better.

Sounds good, but the only problem that I have with this is Windows Vista! otherwise, it would be nice to have.

If this new HP touch screen tablet PC is anything like the HP 1120tx I bought last year, then stay away from it. The product is garbage. The duo core with Vista runs very hot —the underneath of the machine is too hot to touch. The fan sounded like a jet engine. The touch screen stopped working 2 months after I purchased it. HP could not fix it. The wireless went next. And then after just limping along using it as a ordinary laptop with a wireless mouse and external usb wireless internet , the motherboard quit. I spent hours and hours talking with the HP tech people who were trying to be helpful but nothing ever got repaired. The product has an appeal (touch screen etc) but it is a piece of junk. If anyone out there needs parts, let me know—-if not now, you soon will.

I'll definitely buy a multi-touch laptop….that is, as soon as Apple comes out with one. Boo Vista! Hooray for Mac!

I think Dr McAulay got a lemon because I have a tx2000 and it is wonderful, I've had it for awhile and nothing has broken. When I read reviews for it there was a major complaint about the heat, but I use the computer in bed, with it sitting on my bare leg and while it does get warm it isn't unconfortable.

HP is the worst computer ever in the market, my experience with HP has been a shame for the computer industry, my last computer lives in the repair shop 70 % of the time

How on earth can this be a first? Maybe for HP but I am using a Dell Latitude XT and am very happy with the results. It IS the first tablet convertible that allows you to use your fingers or a non-powered pen besides keyboard, touch pad and track stick! It's less than 4.5 pounds, but keep in mind you will pay a premium unless you do what I did and purchase a refurbished unit saving $2000 bringing it in the same price range as this new HP – yes it's not a mistype, however this is a business unit, maybe Dell will come out with a home office version.
