Video: How ‘noise cancellation’ headphones work

By Comments (6)

Noise-cancellation headphones are a popular accessory these days because they work well to greatly reduce ambient noise around you (such as engine roar on an airplane). To help understand how it works, check out this 2-minute video with visual and audio demonstrations.

"The same holds true for you ears". Holds true for YOU ears? I may not be able to hear through the headphones, but I can still see the errors. Spell check can usually fix these problems. Better luck next time.

Actually.. since you is a word.. spell check wouldnt have caught that error…??

  • Noise canceling headphones are a wonderful tool – and this is a fun demonstrations to prove it! I love knowing why and how gadgets work :)

Drop by to see my 95 year old 'Pop', in action – wearing a noise canceling microphone/headset to dictate text at up to 150 wpm using Dragon Naturally Speaking 10, with absolutely no outside noise interference!

This proves to me it's never too late to learn about new technology…

Noise CAnceling Headphones are a brilliant investment. They cut out all background noise hence allow you to listen to your music at a lower volume, hence they lessen the risk of losing your hearing. Im extremely happy that i invested in these. They are particularly good for businessmen, like myself, who are frequent flyers. They block out all the surrounding noise and allow you to focus on your work and have a good sleep before your business meeting. This is where i got mine from – Noise Canceling Headphones

  • SarahShuck says:

Retail noise cancelling headphones typically use ANC to cancel the lower-frequency portions of the noise; they depend on more traditional methods such as soundproofing to prevent higher-frequency noise from reaching the ear. This approach is preferred because it reduces the demand for complicated electronic circuitry and at higher frequencies, active cancellation is less effective. To truly cancel high frequency components (coming at the ear from all directions), the sensor and emitter for the cancelling waveform would have to be adjacent to the user’s eardrum, which is not technically feasible.

    SarahShuck,

Thank you for the in-depth explanation of the science behind the noise-cancellation technology!

    Best,
