Turn your DNA into art |

Talk about a one-of-a-kind piece. This Canadian company takes a sample of your DNA and creates an original (conversation) piece of artwork for your wall. Cool or creepy?
As seen on the CSI: NY television show and in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), DNA 11 is an Ottawa-based company that produces original artwork out of your own DNA, collected via a non-invasive swab from the inside of your cheek.
Send the kit back to the lab and you'll receive a unique genetic fingerprint of yourself on canvas to hang on the wall.
Depending on the size, costs vary between $423 and $1300 for DNA “portraits,” but shipping within Canada is free.
Fingerprint or kiss portraits are also available, beginning at $206 and $314, respectively.
Is this something you'd do or does the concept of sending your DNA to a company freak you out?

Is it just me or, sending your DNA genetic fingerprint to people by mail just a little strange? With Identity theft at an all time high, why would you chance it. Do you really know who is getting it. You get a real great piece of art, and they get another sample to start cloning with....Kinda makes you wonder ..Hmmm........

They cant't steal your identity with DNA, none of it is realated to all that paperwork... Also, with the price involved in cloning a human being, not to mention the complexity, i don't they would waste it on mail in DNA whne i'm sure there's a lot of odd people out there dying to get cloned (for reasoned i cant understand). I find the art itself pretty cool in my honest opinion

Very cool indeed! If I could afford it (I don't have an art budget at the moment) I would totally get a big frame of my DNA or fingerprints for my wall... Makes it very unique and no one else in the world would have the same piece of art on their wall!

It is fascinating to see a visual representation of ones DNA. By this I also am intrigued. But I don't like that they call this art. This isn't art, it is a fingerprint or a visual representation of your DNA. Not quite the same. I find that part annoying and frustrating.

Really cool idea! and about cloning humans, there is a) ethical issues and laws (i think) prohibiting such research b) cloning humans at the moment has never been documented c) therefore no cloning!!!

This has been around for a number of years now, this company I mean. I'm surprised that more people haven't heard about it sooner.

At least now we can find out if Elvis is alive.....

I wouldn't worry too much about cloning until they ask for your cryogenically stored ovaries...
And why isn't it art? What is art, Kate, that makes this not art?

....interesting.....but I have "created" unique artwork with photos of people....non "invasive" + also one of a kind !!!

I love the DNA art. My brother and his wife have one for each of them in their home. I highly disagree with Kate on her comment that this isn't art. A painting, or sculpture or photograph are all just visual representations of other things.

Not a fan of the work and the guys that run it.

This is quite silly. If you know someone who works in a lab, that person can run a DNA gel and get those shiny little bands easily. Then you take the picture and go to any photo shop and they'll blow it up for ya, costing way less than what this company's charging. You can even edit it to your content on Photoshop before hand... this is such a rip off.

of course it's not as trivial as you make it out to be. isolating the DNA, having the appropriate enzymes for a decent looking band pattern, not to mention having a good enough camera to scale up an image to that size while retaining decent image quality. i agree that its overpriced for what is it, but hey when you have a monopoly over something you can charge however much you want.

I think it's dumb. I agree with the concept of it being a one-of-a-kind, but c'mon. What's next? X-rays?
