@Damien: I haven't tried the NWZS638FB, but judging the specs, I'd say it should be every bit as good as the model I reviewed, save for the noise-cancellation feature. The NC feature really is what makes the S736F stand above the crowd, but if NC isn't important to you, I'm sure you'll appreciate the 638FB's higher storage capacity and cheaper price.

@Amie : It's hard to make a firm recommendation without knowing what you want and how much you're prepared to spend. But if you've never bought an MP3 player before, I suggest you go to a retail store and take a look at the various models on display. Talk to a salesperson or two. Consider the features that really matter to you e.g. memory capacity, sound quality, size and shape etc. And don't forget that, as with most things, you get what you pay for. I've owned several "budget" MP3 players and they've all broken quickly and offered poor performance compared to the more expensive models.
Good luck!

"I remember the last root-kit and so do alot of other folks. I won't take a chance on Sony again - these guys are criminals. Corporate paper heads at best."

Root-kit might be a spot of bother, but it doesn't mean that Sony's sound quality can be beatble. Sod off!

I don't really need or want the ability to look at pics or play videos...but the fact that it is so versatile (file formats, drag/drop and/or use windows media player) is very appealing. what are the B and E series models like?

Sony? Yup uhuh... and what illegal software will they incude with their install package? More root kits?

Rest assured you'll have to think like Sony to use this item - they have a very narrow vision so put your blinders on to use it.

I remember the last root-kit and so do alot of other folks. I won't take a chance on Sony again - these guys are criminals. Corporate paper heads at best.

@Anil: There's no question, if you're looking for memory or extra features, there are better deals than both the Walkman and the iPod. But if sound quality matters to you, I don't think you'll find a better sounding media player at this or any other price. It's that good. Audition it for yourself and see if you agree.

Not to burst your bubble, but there are many better devices than this with a far less price.

After missing the boat, Sony is still coming up short.

I can get a device with twice the memory, bluetooth support and a larger screen for less..
