KeyScan introduces a PC keyboard first
Convergence has been a trend in tech for some time — be it cameras built into mobile phones or GPS devices that play MP3s — and now we have the first hybrid computer keyboard and scanner.
Convergence has been a trend in tech for some time — be it cameras built into mobile phones or GPS devices that play MP3s — and now we have the first hybrid computer keyboard and scanner.
Occupying the same footprint as a regular keyboard, the KeyScan KS810 ($159) is a PC keyboard and sheet-feed scanner in one. The product scans black-and-white and colour documents of various sizes – from 3.5 x 2-inch business cards all the way up to 8.5 x 30-inch paper.
A full-page, 300 dots per inch (dpi) grayscale document takes about five seconds to scan. Output resolution tops 4800dpi, which is ideal for digitizing cherished old photos.
Included with the KS810 is KeyScan’s proprietary NoTouch-AutoScan software, allowing users to scan documents without pressing any buttons – simply insert the paper into the feeding slot near the back of the keyboard and the scanned document automatically becomes a searchable PDF email attachment. Alternatively, you can save the scanned item as a Word documents, JPG or TIF image file, and other file formats.
A Windows XP SP2- or Vista-based operating system is required. More info on the product is available at the product website.

Nothing new here.
I recall seeing something very similar years ago in 'Byte'.
A little desultory research tells me it was the April 1996 issue.
Maybe the footprint on the new model is a bit smaller, but the main point remains; the idea is Twelve Years old.
Always take the publicity with a grain of salt.

Compaq Paperport Keyboard Scanner
I remember doing Technical Support on these New PC KeyBoard/Scanners introduced in Compaq's new Presario 7232 PC, part of the new 7200, 9200 and 9600 series PCs.
This was in Windows 3.1, and Windows 95; so why all the Hype.
Been There; Done That.
