They obviously didn't poll our house. We bought a plasma for $4000 and it lasted 4 years, then had a mysterious black line through the screen that wouldn't go away. Apparently, a common issue. So it cost us $1000 a year for 4 years for the TV. It would be $2000 to repair/replace. Now we are using the old school 20 inch Walmart special ($100) TV that has lasted over 6 years. HAHAHA. Give those pollsters a few years when their plasmas start to break down. They won't be so happy to shell out another $2000.

Wouldn't anybody that upgraded from an old TV (tube-based or otherwise) by happy with their choice of TV (regardless of what it was)?!

"No, actually I preferred my old tube TV because the picture was far superior...", DUH!

And of those surveyed that said they also had an LCD TV, how many of them bought a cheap LCD TV disregarding the proper specs to look for when buying an LCD and then are comparing to their new Plasma. Doh!

PS:
I'm extremely satisfied with my LCD TV.

Perhaps this happiness quotient might be tied to what the PDC
might alternately be called: "Enough Disposable Income for High End Electronics", or EDIHEE.

Thank you Eisenpony...
Someone who not only read, but like me, chose to look a little further. Its people like you and Brian above, who make up for the lesser intelligence of the masses. I was actually thinking of purchasing a plasma, but now i am not sure, as I don't want to get a reputation of being a mindless dolt, after scanning this page today!

Who are the Plasma Display Coalition? Well it's a coalition, so probably several companies.. A quick browse of their site shows four rather recognizable names.
Hitachi
LG
Panasonic
Pioneer
Maybe there are more, maybe not... Now why would these companies say Plasma is better? Well they're in the Plasma Display Coalition right? So bragging about how great plasma tv's are will only increase their sales right? But wait a second, these guys make LCD tv's too. So are they really improving their bottom line? Probably not.

I just glanced over the comments on this page. Seems nearly everyone is of the opinion Plasmas have a better quality image. Only those who have no opinion or a bad experience seem to dispute that owning a Plasma is a bad idea. Now you could argue the only people who would read, and thusly comment on this page are plasma owners, but really - where do we end?

I was reading the comments, and it sounds to me as though plasma's may be great but if they're not going to last as long they're wasteful. Firstly not only because they consume more power but also because you'll have to replace it much faster than one of the old tv's. Have we really become such a materialistic society that the quality of the picture is more important than how much its going to cost us over the next 5 years? In any case, I have to say that it is pretty disturbing when you know companies are sponsoring 'studies' about their own product and getting great results. Marketing makes it so hard to know what you are -really- buying!

AAArrrrrrrrrrggghhhh!
Ok imagine this was not a question of tvs. Imagine Mr Saltzman had written an article about, say, the "Coalition of Pampers diaper users of Ontario" saying that pampers diaper users were hands down the most satisfied users, citing less, leakage and odours than other brands! What would you say then? The study was flawed?....Forget tvs and READ THE ARTICLE!

I own a 50" plasma and am very satisfied. However, I think most people who buy a large screen TV would be happy no matter it be plasma or LCD. Picture quality has more to do with the source. Standard def won't look as good as HD no matter what type of TV you choose. What type of TV you choose depends on the lighting in your room as well. We chose plasm for our basement rec room because there's less light. LCD's generally look better in a bright room.
