Set your photos free this summer with Flickr Mobile

Whether or not you’re a Flickr fan on the PC, here’s a quick summary of what you can do with this fun app for your phone.

* Upload your favourite pics – even ones taken seconds earlier from your phone – to your Flickr Mobile account, and your friends can check out your shots immediately on their phone or PC. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, so you can give your texting thumbs a break for a change and keep your peeps up-to-date with your summer camping, outdoor concerts or patio antics.

* Access everyone else’s photos — anywhere, anytime — from virtually any cell phone, plus you may choose to tag photos with searchable keywords, or mark your favourites. Whether it’s access to your friends, family or the world’s best photographers, the entire (and huge) Flickr community is at your fingertips.

* Search, view and make comments on your friend’s photos or those by other Flickr members, and you can also review and respond to comments made on your photos by others – all from your phone. Flickr Mobile also gives you access your Flickr contacts to send a message to a friend while out and about.

Some carriers are giving you a taste of Flickr Mobile for free, such as Rogers Wireless (until August 6), but keep in mind regular browsing rates apply after this free period.

To get going, you need to first sign up for your free Flickr account on a PC or log in with your existing Yahoo! ID. On your phone, launch Flickr Mobile from your browser, and then upload photos in one of two ways, depending on which phone you own:

1. Over the air: supported by some devices, such as some Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones (note: a data charge is associated with the photo upload). After you log into your account, select “Upload a photo” from the menu and then pick your pic.

2. Email via MMS (multimedia messaging service): supported by all devices. Standard MMS data charges apply. You’ll need to first copy the Flickr Mobile email address to your phone’s contact list and then select "Upload via MMS" to follow the instructions.
