If you need a bit of a performance boost on your laptop computer you might try increasing the amount of system memory (RAM). And with the help of this handy 5-minute video tutorial, you’ll see it’s not such a tough procedure after all.

Laptop_ram_2If you need a bit of a performance boost on your laptop computer you might try increasing the amount of system memory (RAM). And with the help of this handy 5-minute video tutorial, you’ll see it’s not such a tough procedure after all.

Last week we posted a video on upgrading RAM for a desktop computer, but here we cover how to do it on a laptop (a.k.a. notebook) PC:

Thanks for this post. However, is such upgrade/installation all the same for any notebook model? For instance, I heard that not every notebook can be upgraded and that people would have to phone the manufacturers instead of just doing the work yourself, which I find a nuisance. I have an Inspiron 1100 and would like to increase it's RAM.

Do it yourself, but do your research first. For example, check your manual to see how much RAM the computer can handle.

The most important step is ensuring you buy the right type of RAM. The exact correct type, not a type that is just close. Go to a RAM manufacturer's Web site (Kingston or one of the others) and let the site scan your computer. It will tell you what you need and even sell it to you right there.

Also, go for a big increase. If you have 500MB of RAM and your PC can handle 2GB, buy a 1GB stick instead of a 500MB stick. The price difference is not too much and it's worth the extra.

Thank you for the feedback Peter, I really appreciate the advice you've given. I went to Kingston's website to have my Inspiron 1100 scanned but for some reason it wasn't working even when I d/led the software instead of their on-the-go online scan. So I went to Memorystock.co instead and it returned me several of their suggested alternatives. I went to a local Canada Computers store around here and bought 2 Kingston 512MB DDR400 PC3200. I did my research before buying these products.

This post was definitely helpful. I have NEVER toyed with the internal of these things (desktop/notebook wise) and the first time I opened up the RAM compartment I didn't know how the heck to get just one of those things out with a metal slot enclosing both. Little did I know I just needed to try and flick the tiny locks on the sides and wallah! Once the upgrades were installed I noticed an increase of performance like holy crap. Thanks so much for the assist!

I also learn that Rechargeable dell batteries undergo self-discharging when left unused. Always store a inspiron battery pack in a fully charged staged for storage. so you need full charged before go hoilday, so will keep you new dell battery in 100% condition
Dell inspiron 1100 laptop can't meet needs now, and the old dell inspiron 1100 battery ( http://www.batterygoshop.co.uk/dell/inspiron-1100-series-battery.htm) can only last 3 hours.

  • Can anybody help me with my problem? I bought a Dell
laptop last May 08. Since I got it, it regularly shuts
down and goes to the blue screen of death. I contacted
Dell almost immediately and was told that they would be
able to fix it "100%". Since I had confidence in their
abilities at the time, I patiently went along with their
updates, restores, replacements, etc. Finally, 10 months
later, I said enough and asked for another computer.
They informed me that I could only get a "refurbished"
computer. No one is interested in helping and there is
definitely no customer relations to go to. Any suggestions?
I was basically told to take the refurbished
computer or they would close my case.
