Sony’s strawberry-sized surround sound speakers

Yes, it’s true. Size matters. And for some, bigger isn’t better. According to Sony, tiny is terrific.

Sony_htis100_speaker_with_strawberrYes, it’s true. Size matters. And for some, bigger isn’t better. According to Sony, tiny is terrific.

We’ve already told you about Sony’s plasma-killing new XBR8 Bravia LED LCD TVs. And if you’re concerned that having such a fancy TV will make your existing sound system look like an artefact from the pre-internet era, Sony has the solution: the HT-IS100 Bravia Theatre Micro System, which delivers rich and powerful 5.1 surround sound audio out of satellite speakers no bigger than a strawberry (see image). Seriously, this is crazy.

Along with these teeny speakers that are big on sound, the HT-IS100 is essentially a 450-watt audio-video receiver with integrated subwoofer, which includes three 1080p HDMI inputs for high-definition components such as Blu-ray machines, video game consoles and high-def satellite/cable boxes.

Unlike its predecessor, the HT-IS100 also supports optional wireless rear speakers (requiring the $180 SA10 speaker kit). The HT-IS100 will be available in July for about $700. We’re anxious to test this audio system and report the results, so stay tuned to Sync for details.

Just to let you know… this System (450 watts) is not going to replace your Harman Kardon, Denon, Marantz with a Bose Speaker system at 1200 Watts. Dont get me wrong… this system is a really cool piece of equipment. I own the DAV-IS10 (It's predecessor) and quite happy with it but it is in my BEDROOM. I would not reccomend this product in rooms more than 12ft x 12ft. Smaller if you have an open concept type. You really have to crank up the volume (70%) to get a great effect. But over all.. for the size of it.. it packs a great punch… Besides, I didn't tell my wife I bought the system and didn't notice it was there 2 weeks later when i was watching a movie… she was wondering where the sound was comming from…. BTW… The speakers are very solid… even if you sat on it, it wont break.. and took me 30 mins to set up.. it comes with mounting brackets for the speakers (has to be Specialized) and looks great since it has such a small footprint. Oh yeah… The DAV-IS10 is on sale at Future shop for $399.99 ($500 OFF!) an ends today June 12… Better hurry!!
