Toshiba unveils new gadget charging feature |

Last week, Toshiba's U.S. division announced a new line of Satellite laptops with an interesting – and long-overdue – feature called "sleep-and-charge," designed for gadget lovers.
"Sleep-and-charge" is a fairly simple idea, so it's surprising how long it's taken to debut.
What is it, you ask? Even when turned off, the laptop's multiple USB ports will have power, therefore you can use your laptop to charge your devices such as a BlackBerry, iPod and digital camera.
This is better than having to turn on your laptop's power just to charge your devices, and it's certainly more ideal than lugging around a bunch of adaptors for your various devices.
While in the U.S, these new Toshiba Satellite laptops are available now (starting at $599), Sync contacted Toshiba Canada's PR agency and found out this "sleep-and-charge" feature isn't offered in Canada and no word on when it'll arrive.

This is one of those moments when I smack my head and wonder what took them so long to bring something like this to market. Of course, getting the little things right is what matters most in a hardware market where every laptop kinda looks and works just like every other laptop.
Thinking like this explains why Apple has the fan base that it does. They sweat the small stuff - think magnetic AC adapters and backlit keyboards - that most electronics manufacturers seemingly ignore. One hopes the Toshiba announcement doesn't stop there, that it forces other vendors to start looking at how their devices are used, and how they can improve them in small, cost-effective ways.
In future, it's stuff like this that will drive market share.

I suspect this feature will become the "coffee-cup holder" of laptops -- one of those simple things that probably doesn't cost that much to add, and once somebody does it, everyone will, because all buyers will expect it, and curse the laptops that don't have it.

As much as this sounds interesting it only serves to tick me off that something this simple is not being released at the same time (and with no known release date) in Canada. I understand our market is much smaller but they're not reinventing the wheel they're adding a small accessory. At least I know I'm not buy a Toshiba laptop. (For a while at least).

Toshiba ships the Tecra R10 with Windows Vista Business as standard, and this operating system comes with its own performance measurement tool, the Windows Experience Index. Under this, the Tecra achieved a score of 3.8, but this was pegged back by the system's low score for 3D gaming graphics due to the integrated functions in its Intel chipset. For each of memory, graphics and hard disk performance, the Tecra scored over 5, where 5.9 is the maximum.
